Obituary

James Butler, 81, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on Friday, October 17, 2025, at Novant Health Hospice & Palliative Care in Charlotte, NC.

James Butler - a man whose presence brought light, laughter, and love to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.  James, affectionately known as "Jr.", was more than a friend, more than a family member - he was a steady source of strength, compassion, and wisdom. He lived his life with purpose and humility, always putting others before himself and finding joy in the simplest moments.

Born on August 5, 1944 to Mattie Butler and James Houston, James graduated from West Charlotte High School in 1963. He went on to serve his country honorably in the United States Army for 30 years, followed by 28 years of dedicated service at the United States Post Office.

On December 12, 1965, James married Roma Clardy, the love of his life, and to this union, two sons, William and Steven, were born. Together, James and Roma shared 51 years of love, laughter, and friendship - a bond rooted in faith, family, and devotion.

A lifelong member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, James served faithfully as an usher for more than 20 years. He was an active participant in the Men's and Senior Bible Study classes, Sunday School, and devoted much of his time to mentoring young men through the Boy Scouts. His faith was steadfast, and his service to others reflected the very essence of his character.

Jr. led by quiet example - patient, kind, and resilient. He showed that success isn't measured by wealth or status, but by the love and respect you earn from those around you. He had a way of making people feel seen and valued. His laughter could fill a room, his advice always came from the heart, and his kindness left an imprint that will never fade.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Roma; his mother, Mattie Butler; his father, James Houston; his son, James William Butler, Jr.; his sisters, Mary B. Maxwell, Alice B. Word, and Sarah B. Caldwell; and his brother, Leroy Houston.

Left to cherish and continue his legacy are his son, Steven Butler; sisters, Edna B. Barnes (Oscar) and Abbie L. Butler; brother, Gerald N. Butler; nieces, Chauntina Sadler (Greg), Anita Word, Dana Withers, LaChandra Archer (Ricardo), and Ellen Parker; nephews, Nathan Word, James Houston, Timothy Livingston; great-nieces, YaVonka Stitt, Maryssa Sadler, and Cecile Sadler; and great-nephews, Travis Withers and Kendrick Archer.

Though his passing leaves a void that can never be filled, we find comfort in knowing that his legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the lessons he taught, and the love he shared.  James Butler will be deeply missed, but his spirit remains with us in our memories, in our hearts, and in the countless ways he made this world a better place.
