For those of us who are blessed with an earthly existence, there is a time to be born and a time to die. The eldest of eight children, the earthly life of James Arthur Laws began December 4, 1944 in Chatham County, North Carolina, to the late Bud and Grace Laws. Being obedient to the will of the Master, he answered the call and went quietly to sleep at the Novant Health Hospice on Friday, February 25, 2022.
James moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1969. He met the love of his life, the late Magdalene Gregory Laws, and they joined in holy matrimony. She was a faithful and dedicated wife who loved and cared for him until her heavenly departure. They were a loving couple, and family was important to them.
The city of Charlotte employed James from 1977 until her retired in 2007. After retiring, he took up gardening as a hobby. The neighbors described him as a pillar of his community. A quiet man but helpful to anyone who needed it.
James was preceded in death by his sister Brenda Ann Laws and brother Bud Laws, Jr.
James leaves to cherish his memories, his son, William J. T. Monk, Maryland; Stepchildren: Filmore Gregory (Essie) of Brooklyn, NY, Charles A. Gregory of Winston-Salem, NC, Stanley Gregory of Charlotte, NC; and stepdaughter Cathy L. Maxwell, of Charlotte, NC; sister, Geraldine Laws Carrington (Clifton), Durham, NC; brothers, Melvin Laws, Charlotte, NC, Clyde Laws (Tressa), Durham, NC; Joe Laws. Durham, NC; and Robert Laws (Norsena), Durham, NC and host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
Today, we celebrate your life, a life well-lived and one that will remain forever in our hearts. Look down upon us, that we may be reminded of the life that you lived with God being your guiding force.
