James Calvin McGrant, 70 of Charlotte, NC gained his wings on Saturday, August 28, 2021, at Levine and Dickson Hospice House at Southminster. He was born in Charlotte, NC on December 14, 1950, to the late James McGrant and Sarah Nash McGrant.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Shirley Temple Nash and Ophelia McGrant.
James graduated from high school through Central Piedmont Community College inn Charlotte, NC. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in 1972 and was honorably discharged in 1976.
James' cousin, Alfred Caldwell, taught him how to play the guitar when he was a teenager. He was good at his skill and along with friends created a band called Funkadelics. He had a lengthy career as a musician and band leader. The Funkadelics performed at numerous clubs and venues in the Charlotte area and around the country.
When he gave up being in a band, he became on of the top-notch DJs in Charlotte. Later in life, James' entrepreneurship was being a mechanic. He could fix anything that had a motor. His gift for fixing cars extended until his health declined.
James is survived by his daughter, Tanisha Spaulding and granddaughter, Eumika Tillman; brother, Brennie McGrant (Darlene); sisters, Evelyn McGrant, Troy Worthy and Denise McGrant; friend, Mary Pearson; nephews, Kenneth McGrant, Jonathan McGrant, Michael McGrant, Amari Rashaden; nieces, Monica Henderson, Monique McGrant, Mekilla Kearse; and a host of other grand-nephews and nieces, other relatives and friends.
