Mr. J.B. Henderson, 84, of Charlotte NC departed this life on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at Peak Resources.
J.B. Henderson, 84, of Charlotte, North Carolina, departed his earthly life on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at Peak Resources, 3223 Central Avenue, Charlotte, North Carolina. He was the son of the late Margaret Henderson and Simon Wallace.
JB grew up in the Grier Heights Community where he was an ardent community activist. He was a lifelong member, leader, and true disciple of Christ at his dear Grier Heights Presbyterian Church. He was a graduate of the 1959 Class of the now closed Second Ward High School, recently recognized by the City of Charlotte as the oldest Black high school.
At Grier Heights Presbyterian Church, JB served as a Trustee, Deacon, Church Choir Member (Men's Choir), Men's Council, Usher and Sunday School member. He was also known for his role in helping to keep the grounds of his church maintained to "JB standards." This "Green Thumb" touch also extended to his beloved community. He could be seen on many days working along side Robert Gill and Barbara Simpson to keep Grier Heights grounds up to their strict standards! In addition, JB was known for his cake and pie baking. He enjoyed baking German Chocolate, Pound, Coconut, and Hummingbird cakes for church friends and family.
As a young boy, growing up in "Grier Town," JB was always a disciplined, hardworking, independent individual. He worked after school for several years for the Ivey Stuart family who resided in the all White 7th Street District, which bordered the all Black Grier Heights Community. JB's adult employment culminated with his retirement from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education's Maintenance Department. During his last years of retirement, he was called for a special assignment in this position - to maintain only the Superintendent of Schools private offices. JB was requested because of his quiet and efficient demeanor and the Superintendent's desire for complete privacy - he trusted no one else to maintain his private quarters other than JB Henderson.
Mr. Henderson leaves to celebrate and to mourn his life, his sister, Sylvia (Shang) Bogany Henderson; and brother, Edward (Bubba) Henderson, of the home. In addition to his parents, JB was preceded to glory by one sister, Clara (Coota) Henderson in June 2022. Excluding his bloodline family, mourning his departure is his life-time buddy, Robert F. Brown. Also, a special earthly angel friend will miss JB, Jerry Alexander who made JB's final days "sweet" by bringing him a Pepsi and Honey Bunn religiously once a week. This small act of kindness made the day for both the giver and receiver.
