Jeanette Barnes Best, 92 of Charlotte, NC passed away on Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at her residence. She was born on June 5, 1929 to Thomas and Minnie Barnes in Stantonsburg, North Carolina. Jeanette attended Williamson High School, Lucama. She married Hersel Best in 1947 and they relocated to New York in 1955. Her joy was preparing meals for family, friends, neighbors, and her pastors. She used food to bring people together. Jeanette's culinary skills led her to be the first African American female chef at Beaux Arts, a major New York City hotel. She later became a restaurant owner in Brooklyn, New York. Jeanette baked and cooked her way into everyone's heart.
Jeanette invited Christ into her heart at an early age. While living in North Babylon, New York, she became a member of First Church of Wyandanch Ministries where she served as a Deaconess, President of Pastor's Aide Committee and a member of the Senior Adult Choir. After relocating to Charlotte, North Carolina, she became a member of Northside Baptist Church. As a part of the Visitation Ministry, she ministered to the sick and shut-in. Jeanette loved her hats, her collection rivaled only by Queen Elizabeth's.
Jeanette entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, September 29, 2021. Left to cherish her memories are her husband of 74 years, Hersel Best Sr.; daughters, Mary Ann Lamb, Carolyn Buford (Howard Sr.) and son Hersel Best Jr.; six grandchildren, Lisa Armbrister (Dwayne), Sean Lamb, Holly Bryant, Monique Lide (Jermaine), Howard Buford Jr. (Delphine), and Hersel Best III (Aria); twenty-two great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; brothers, Samuel Barnes, Sr., Moses Barnes Sr. (Thelma), Nathaniel Barnes, Jasper Barnes and sisters, Inez Tyson, Minnie Hall, Mary Newsome and Edith Barnes; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her siblings, Daisy Bell Ward, Thomas Barnes Jr., Ruby Mae Barnes and Robert Barnes; and son-in-law, James Lamb.
