Obituary

Mr. Jeffery Quincy McGill, 52 a long-time residence of Charlotte, passed away on April 12, 2016 of gastrointestinal stomach cancer.  He was the youngest child born to the late John Thomas and Stella Mae McGill.
Jeff graduated from Independence High School in 1983.  God blessed Jeff with a special talent to play basketball. He attended Fort Union Military Academy in Virginia with high hopes of receiving a basketball scholarship.  He worked very hard in his academics and basketball to achieve his goal.  Jeff received a scholarship to Wake-Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC.  He later transferred to Eastern Kentucky where he received hi Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education.  Jeff blossomed as a player at Eastern Kentucky becoming the best three-point shooting guard in the League.  In the midst of school and athletics, Jeff managed to become a licensed barber.

Jeff and Lisa Hardy McGill married eighteen years ago on October 24,1998, at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Jeff was employed with the City of Charlotte as a firefighter II for 16 years.  Protecting the city of Charlotte meant a great deal to him.  He love to fellowship with his Fire Department brothers and share God's Word with them.
Jeff loved the Lord; this was no secret to all who knew him.  He was baptized at an early age at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church.  On December 12th, he was licensed to preach the Gospel under the leadership of Pastor Donnie R. Garris, becoming the Youth Minister, serving on the RAIN team(Regional Aids Interfaith Network) and also on the Heart 2 Heart married couples ministry at Antioch.  After many faithful years at Antioch, Jeff was inspired to see what else God had for him so he moved his family to Steele Creek Church of Charlotte under Pastor Kelvin Smith, whom he knew well since high school.  Wherever he was, Jeff was a life coach for his youth.  He focused on their full development: mind, body and soul, and of course, used basketball as a catalyst to touch their lives and spirits for God.

Left to cherish his memory are wife, Lisa and his children, whom he loved more than life, Jerrica, Jaylan and Jaden McGill; a sister, Clarethia M. Love, two brothers, Wayne (Annette) and Kenneth (Jackie); sisters-in-law, Gloria McGill, Vernedda Patton (Kevin, Sr.),Tamara Davis (Zack),Sherry Hardy, Tracie Howell; father-in-law, James Howell six aunts; two uncles; a host of nieces, nephews, a multitude of cousins; and friends, too numerous to count.
