Joe Shepherd, 84 of Charlotte, was called home on Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at his residence. He was the son of the late Joe Shepherd, Sr. and the late Queen Esther Martin, was born May 4, 1936 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He was preceded in death by a brother and sister.
Joe received his formal education in the Tuscaloosa, Alabama School System. Joe was a member of Greater Mount Sinai Baptist Church where he was the van driver in Charlotte, NC. He was devoted to driving the young-at-hearts to their social activities and outings. He served two years in the United States Army and was stationed in Fort Riley, Kansas. In 1977, Joe started working for Military Sealift Command where he was a cook and baker on a Navy hospital ship. He served 30 years until his retirement in 2005.
"Sarge", as he was affectionately called by his family and friends, was a devoted husband, father, and friend. He blessed many people with his kindness and love and spent most of his life caring and giving to others. His memory will forever be with us.
Joe was join in holy matrimony to the late Hattie M. Ceasar, and this union was blessed with one daughter.
Left to cherish his memory are his devoted daughter, Denise Shepherd; two grandchildren, Deondra and Dennitra Shepherd; two aunts, Vera Riddle of Bessemer, Alabama and Ollie Ross of Brooklyn, New York; two sisters-in-law, Charlie M. Guyton (Tony) of Bronx, New York and Mary Caesar of New York, NY; three brothers-in-law, David Ceasar of New York, NY, Marshall Ceasar of Newark, New Jersey and Johnny L. Ceasar (Haretha) of Durham, North Carolina; nephew, Charles Wiley of Seattle, Washington; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
