Obituary

John Arthur Colbert, 62 of Charlotte, passed away on Monday June 15, 2020.  He was born in Charlotte, NC to the late Dee Anderson Colbert and the late Reverend Corine Sims Colbert.

John grew up in Charlotte and attended South Mecklenburg High School.  He married the love of his life Albertene Johnson.

John accepted Christ at an early age and loved the Lord with all of his heart.  He loved singing and his favorite song was "Do You Know The Man From Galilee".  Serving in the Church was his passion and ensuring the hungry were fed was his top priority.  He made it his business to prepare delicious meals for the outreach ministry of Faith Hope and Love in Gastonia, NC.  He was a member of Restoration Apostolic Holiness Church until the Lord led him and his wife to New Testament Holiness Church, where he faithfully served and sponsored annual 30-day revivals.  It was his desire with this effort to see souls come to Christ as they did in the early Church.

John was an avid gun collector and absolutely loved cooking.  He was infamous for his creamy grits 'swimming" in butter and for his BBQ Pig Feet.  He enjoyed interacting on a regular basis with his close-knit family.  He was a comedian in his own right, was very people oriented and REALLY enjoyed talking.  Following in the footsteps of his father, John was a great storyteller and once he had your attention, hours would be spent listening to what he had to say.  His father was a great painting contractor and taught his sons the dynamics of the business.  He and his brothers worked faithfully in the business with their father until he passed away.  Later in life, John became the proud owner/operator of his own company: Colbert Painting Co. Inc.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Walter, Michael and James; sisters, Beulah and Mary.

He leaves to cherish fond memories, his loving wife, Albertene; two sons, Darius L. Johnson and Marcus J. Pratt, both of Charlotte, NC; five grandchildren, Darius D. Johnson, Marcus T. Pratt, Kingston Pratt, Fierra Martin and Johnny Sturdivant, all of Charlotte, NC; two great-grandchildren, Cali Gianni Sturdivant and Jaysion Sturdivant, all of Charlotte, NC; one aunt, Mother Mary R. White of Charlotte, NC; three sisters, Sarah Broadie (Lee), Miriam Davis (Allen), and Brenda Stevenson (Norman), all of Charlotte; five brothers, Charles Colbert (Barbette), Ralph Colbert, Moses Colbert (Lesia) and David Colbert, all of Charlotte,NC; George Colbert (Sabrina), of Decatur, GA; one brother in law, Harold Johnson of Monroe, NC; two sisters in law, Lona Burns of Monroe, NC and Carol Johnson, of Newark, NJ; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
