John Louis Harvell, born on December 12, 1959 in Charlotte, North Carolina to the late Clara Mae Kearse and Rayfield Harvell. He transitioned from labor to reward peacefully into the Lord's arms on Thursday, March 15, 2018. At an early age John accepted the Lord as his savior as a member of Union Bethel AME Zion of Cornelius, North Carolina.
Affectionately known as "Wiggs", as a teenager, he discovered his love of music and was a self-taught bass guitarist. A 1978 graduate of North Mecklenburg High School, John was a member of both the Varsity Basketball and Football teams. He furthered his education at Winston – Salem State University with a full Football Scholarship. After a career ending injury, John transferred to Johnson C. Smith University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communica-tions. As a college student, John and his close friends founded a music group, Valence, per-forming together throughout the United States for over 15 years. He continued his education at East Coast Polytechnic Institute studying Information Technology.
A faithful employee of Agissar Corporation, John's true passion was playing his bass guitar. As an avid musician, he received many accolades and performed at various events with his Jazz music groups; Valence, GrooveMasters and Upscale. He also recorded a Christian album with Rannon's Call. Additionally, John shared his love for music with many church congregations in the Charlotte Metropolitan area. While playing at a local church he met the love of his life, Yvette, his wife of almost twenty years. John and Yvette have two daughters, Kendra (Nate, Jr.) and Alyssia and two grandsons Nate, III and Caleb.
John also leaves to cherish fond memories his father, Rayfield; mother and father in law Artis, Sr. and Sandra; sisters Mabel (Terry), Jennifer and Toya; brother James; sisters in law, Gloria (Paul), Bennetta (William), Joy (Kenny); brothers in law, Darnell, Artis, Jr. (Latisha) a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, fellow band members and friends. John was prede-ceased by his mother Clara Harvell and sister Sherry Witherspoon.
Funeral service will be held 12:00 noon -Thursday, March 22, 2018 at Grier Memorial Chapel, 115 John McCarroll Avenue. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. to 12 noon. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery.
