Mr. John Charles Maxwell, Sr. was born March 3, 1939 in Charlotte, North Carolina. He transcended this earthly life January 2, 2020. He grew up in Mecklenburg County and was the second child of the late John Graham and Ethel Kearns Maxwell. Two siblings preceded him in death, Richard E. Maxwell and Luther G. Maxwell.
John Charles a.k.a. "JC" attended Second Ward High School and then proceeded to become a Golden Bull at Johnson C. Smith University, where he obtained a degree in Theology.
He was married to the late Delores M. Maxwell and from this union came two sons, John C. Maxwell, Jr. and Derrick M. Maxwell, Sr.Lovingly referred to as "Big Daddy" by his grandchildren, he loved them dearly and was instrumental in stressing the importance of education and family. Among other talents passed to the next the generation included gardening, grilling/cooking, travel, and sports.
A loyal and faithful lifetime member of 7th Street now First United Presbyterian Church where he participated in various ministries such as Elder, the tutorial program, Altar Flower Guild, Men's Choir, Security, and Presbyterian Men.
He worked for Juvenile Services Division as a juvenile probation officer with the State of North Carolina for 37 years, helping countless numbers of youth during the course of his career.
Mr. Maxwell is survived by his companion, Mary Vaughn, sons John C. Maxwell Jr. and Derrick M. Maxwell, Sr. (Michelle), grandchildren John C. Maxwell, III, Kia Renee Maxwell, Derrick M. Maxwell, Jr., Sean Graham Maxwell, Courtney Nelson, great grandson Julian Prince Butler, niece Melanie Renee Maxwell and many family and friends.
