John Lee Newby, 81, of Concord, NC, passed away on Sunday, June 21, 2026 at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center in Salisbury, NC

Command Sergeant Major John Lee Newby, 81, of Charlotte, NC, formerly of Fayetteville, NC, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on June 21, 2026. A devoted Christian, loving father, and career serviceman, John dedicated over thirty years to the United States Army, serving with honor and distinction before retiring to a life centered around family, faith, and service.

Born on April 28, 1945, in Isle of Wight County, VA, to Ms. Louise Newby Jones. John answered his country’s call as a young man and made the Army his lifelong career. Over three decades of service he earned the respect of comrades and leaders for his steadfast commitment, strong work ethic, rigorous consistency, and quiet leadership. His military career took him to assignments both at home and abroad, where he excelled at leadership, obtaining the rank of Sergeant Major at a very young age. He was able to mentor other soldiers, both young and old alike, and guide them on their journey of excelling in their military career.

John was a man of deep Christian faith. He lived out his beliefs through service both in uniform and in his community offering help, counsel, and a ready smile to neighbors and friends. His faith shaped his character and values: humility, responsibility, and compassion. He was a loving child of God who gave generously, supporting his local church and community. Above all, he actively served the Lord.

Family was central to John’s life. John was married to the love of his life, Peggy Ann, for 42 years until her passing in April 2006. He is survived by his five sons— Jeric (Denita), John (Reba), Craig, Glynn (Leisa), and Lance, his six grandchildren— Jerica, J'Ericson, Jillian, Lilyana, Pepper, and Gabriel, and his sisters— Janie, Diana, Alberta, Deborah, and Sharon. His children, grandchildren, and sisters remember him as someone that was patient, kind, and loving.

John enjoyed working on his truck, watching Christian broadcasts on TV, and tending to his garden—small pleasures that reflected his practical, spiritual, and steady nature. He spent his final years in Concord, NC under his son's care and will be remembered for his gentle nature, calm demeanor, and strong but generous leadership.

Command Sergeant Major John Lee Newby’s life was one of service—to his country, his faith, and his family. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
