Mr. Johnny Cunningham, 57, of Atlanta, GA., departed this life on Monday, February 20, 2023 at his residence.
Johnny Chris Cunningham, born April 25, 1965, in Charlotte, NC, transitioned to a life of eternity on February 20, 2023, at his residence in Atlanta, GA. He is preceded in death by his parents, Julia Griffin Cunningham and Johnnie Clyde Cunningham and his life partner, Kevin Barrier. Cris is survived by his brother, William Cunningham; sisters, De'Ann Cunningham and De'Onn Griffin; his nephews, whom he considered his sons, Eddie Miller, Shondell Miller and Thomas Cunningham; his nieces, Alexis Manns, Tamyra Black, Kamille Griffin and Kelis Griffin, all of Charlotte, NC.
Chris, as his family calls him, started his professional journey joining the United States Air Force in 1984 and served ten years, to include the Desert Storm Campaign. Upon exit of service, Eris ranked Sergeant. After serving in the military and having seen some of the world, he wanted to see more. He continued to work for the Air Force as a Contract Fuel Specialist, traveling across three continents. Home was calling him so, Chris moved back to Charlotte to start the next phase of a well-lived life. He enrolled and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 1999. From there, he worked for Dilworth Mattress Company for six years as Senior Accountant and for the Charlotte Mecklenburg County Youth and Family Services in the Accounting Department.
In 2010, Cris found his work niche when he accepted the position as Accounting Analyst for the Salvation Army in Atlanta, GA. He found great joy and challenges being dedicated to the cause of the Church. He spoke often and highly of his colleagues, friends and peers. There, he worked until his passing. Whoever Cris connected with came to love him. Since childhood friends like Demetrius Houston and the Houston family, George Fuller always remained close. The Barrier family became his extended family. The friends Chris made both near and far, he kept; those he loved, he deeply loved, even in death. He leaves an abundance of cousins and three surviving aunts, Mrs. Lillian Stephens, Mrs. Helen Griffin, and Mrs. Mattie Mae Griffin.
The world has been truly blessed by this vessel of God. Rest.
