Obituary

Jonathan Hayden James, 42, of Albemarle, NC, passed away on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC.

Jonathan Hayden James was born on March 24, 1983, in Paterson, NJ, to Bernice James and Bruce Johnson. His early years were spent in Paterson, where he attended elementary school before his family relocated to Erie, PA. There, Jonathan continued his education and graduated from Central High School in 2001.

During his school years, Jonathan excelled in sports such as baseball, karate, and his favorite sport, football, where he played both Offensive and Defensive tackle. His strength and determination on the field earned him the nickname “Tank” from teammates and coaches. Beyond athletics, Jonathan developed a lifelong passion for reading, literature, law, and music. He also pursued further education, taking paralegal and criminal justice classes at a community college in Reading, PA. He was admired for his quick wit, humor, and the thoughtful advice he offered to those around him.

Jonathan’s faith was central to his life. He grew deeply in his relationship with Jesus Christ, was baptized at Shiloh Baptist Church in Erie, and actively participated in church activities, singing in the junior choir, attending Sunday School, and playing drums in the worship band at Family Worship Center.

In 2004, Jonathan moved with his family to Charlotte, NC. He dedicated his professional life to caring for others as a Certified Nurse’s Aide (CNA), reflecting his compassionate nature.

Known for both his physical strength, standing 6’3” and over 240 pounds, and his gentle, steady spirit, Jonathan embodied integrity, faith, and quiet confidence. He was a devoted father to four beloved daughters: Kameron Nicole Calhoun, Riyann Renee James, McKenzie Cora James, and Olivia Bernice James. He is also survived by his loving mother, Bernice James; his brother, Justin (Mary) James; his sister, Joi James; two nephews, Israel “Izzy” Abraham James and Justin Terry “JT” James; and a host of cherished loved ones and friends.

Jonathan entered his heavenly home on Saturday, December 13, 2025. He will be remembered for his strength, humor, faith, and the lasting impact of a life lived with authenticity.
