Obituary

Joseph Calvin Hamilton, formerly Joseph Calvin Bamberg II, was born on Tuesday, March 4, 1947 to Nora Frances Washington in Marshville, North Carolina.

Raised by his beloved grandparents, Brady Hamilton and Frances Parker Hamilton, with his brother-cousin Paul, Calvin was a bright and rambunctious child. Grandpa Brady taught Calvin and Paul to have a strong work ethic, financial stability and integrity. Grandma Frances ensured that they knew about Jesus and the importance of serving in the church and serving others. During his adolescent years, Calvin enjoyed playing baseball and basketball, even competing throughout Union, Mecklenburg, Rockingham and Anson Counties. Calvin also started working at an early age (14) as a busboy and carhop for a local drive-in.

Calvin graduated from East Union High School in 1965. He attended Livingstone College for one year and was drafted by the United States Army in 1966. While serving in the Army, Calvin traveled throughout the United States as well as Europe during his deployment to Germany. After his military service, Calvin returned to the states and set up roots in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was employed by the North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission (ABC Store) as a store clerk for 5 years.

Shortly thereafter, he began his career and trade as a machinist with the company Pelton & Crane. Calvin was a certified machinist and highly skilled craftsman. He worked for the Pelton & Crane (later the Siemens Company)for many years before his retirement in 2012.

On November 18, 1983, Calvin's life forever changed with the birth of his beloved daughter, Cheri Monique. Their bond was, and still is, inseparable. Calvin would say that becoming a father changed his perspective and priorities in life. Shortly after Cheri's birth, Calvin rededicated his life to Christ and focused on being the best father he could be.

Calvin was a very active member of his church. From the mid-1980s through 2005, Calvin was a member of Seigle Avenue First Church of God. He served in a plethora of roles including Trustee Board chairman, member of the Usher Board and Men's Choir, Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher and van driver. In 2009, Calvin joined New Zion Missionary Baptist Church and served faithfully. He loved his church family and served as an usher, parking lot attendant, member of the Men's Choir and as a volunteer in the food pantry.

In 2007, Calvin and Charlotte Roberta Hamilton took a second chance at love and were remarried. Calvin and Charlotte were not just spouses but great friends. They enjoyed traveling, laughter, love and companionship until Calvin's transition from earth.

Whether known by Calvin, Joe, J.C., Pops, Daddio or Daddy, Calvin was a dedicated friend. He never met a stranger and truly had a heart of gold!

Calvin departed this life on Friday, May 7, 2021. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Brady and Frances Hamilton; his mother, Nora Washington; and his beloved stepfather, Thomas J. Washington.

He leaves cherished memories with his loving wife, Charlotte Roberta Maske Hamilton of Charlotte, NC; dedicated daughter, Cheri M. Hamilton of Charlotte, NC; stepson, Myron Troy Davidson (Jai-An) of Wilmington, NC; brother (cousin) Paul Hamilton (Geraldine) of Wingate, NC; sisters-in-law, Tiny Matthews-Caldwell of Charlotte, NC, Margaret Rorie (Ernest), Judy Humphries, and LaVerne Cash, all of Marshville, NC; brother-in-law, Jackie Maske (Marth) of Wingate, NC; aunt, Leland Hubbard of Marshville, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
