Obituary

Katherine Elizabeth White McGill, of Charlotte, North Carolina, peacefully transitioned to her heavenly home on May 21, 2020. Born on December 26, 1933, to the late Woodrow White, Sr. and Pearl White, Katherine was the eldest of six children born to this union. She was united in marriage to the late James McGill on August 29, 1953; a union that lasted for over 43 years until his passing in 1996. They were the proud parents of three children, James Donald McGill, Vernon McGill, and Karen McGill.

She attended Mount Carmel Baptist Church at a young age and joined South Tryon Presbyterian Church, where she taught bible school and was a member of other organizations within the church. Katherine later joined Memorial Presbyterian Church to continue her faith journey. Upon her graduation from West Charlotte High School in 1951, Katherine worked at Dunbar Stanley Studio where she worked as a photographer for many years.

In 1973, she started a new career as a Clerk Typist with the Mecklenburg County Courts System; becoming only the second African American Deputy Clerk to hold that position. She remained in that position for several years until her retirement to become a stay-at-home mom. Katherine had a love for people and enjoyed entertaining, music and practicing her hobbies of baking and calligraphy. She would have everyone laughing at her quick-witted quips though many who knew her best would say, "what came up, came out."

She was preceded in death by her husband, James McGill; her parents, Woodrow White, Sr, and Pearl White; and her son, James Donald McGill.

Reflecting lovingly upon her life, she leaves precious memories with her devoted children, Vernon McGill (Minnie) of Charlotte, and Karen McGill of Georgia; her grandchildren, Chino Funderburk, Shonté Alexander, René Alexander, Schwanna Jenkins (Marcus), Ne Tasha Harris (James), MoQuisha Hutto (Sharika), all of Charlotte, and Arron McGill of Florida; her loving siblings Woodrow White, Jr., Shirley Adams, Bert White (Janis), Betty Gilliard (Paul), Leon White (Betty) all of Charlotte; and loving and supportive in-laws, Washington Johnson, II of Charlotte, and Patricia McGill Jackson (Dale) of Mint Hill, a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives and close friends.
