Obituary

Mr. Kelvin "Alec" Alexander Stroud, 62 of Charlotte, departed this life on Thursday, March 3, 2022.  He was born March 15, 1959 to the late Ms. Lucille (Clyburn) Stroud and the late Rev. James H. Stroud Sr.

Kelvin graduated in 1977 from Garinger High School in Charlotte, NC.  He joined the United States Army on August 17, 1977 and served for three years.  Kelvin received a Rifle N16 badge, Expert Quality badge, Hand Grenade Expert Quality badge, as well as an Assault Expert Quality badge.  He was honorably discharged in 1980.

Kelvin pursued higher education at Rutledge College in 1980, studying computer programing.  He then worked for Carolinas Medical Center as a Nurse Aid III and Phlebotomist.  He also received his certification as Emergency Medical Technician.  Kelvin remained at Carolinas Medical Center until 1991.  Kelvin had several places of employment in the years following including Southern Building Maintenance where he served as a truck driver and supervisor.  Most recently he worked as a event staff member for Spectrum Arena and Bank of America Stadium.  He loved helping people and volunteering his time for community projects.  In 1989, he volunteered his time to disaster relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo through the American Red Cross.  He also rescued a family from a burning house and provided life-saving measures to several family members and friends.

Kelvin's pain ran as deep as his love was wide.  Despite his internal struggles, he continued to love and provide support for his family and friends as best he could.  Kelvin would proudly proclaim that God never left his side and eventually delivered him his life's greatest challenges.  In the last years of his life, Kelvin accomplished many things he was proud of including attending Central Piedmont Community College to pursue a career as a peer support specialist and substance abuse counselor.

Kelvin loved the neighborhood he grew up in and was a proud member of the North Charlotte Reunion Committee.  He was also a member of St. Paul Baptist Church where he served as an usher and member of the Male Chorus.  Kelvin will be remembered for his sense of humor, his kindness, his love of Christ, and for his pride in his presentation.  He was a true light to those who knew him.

Kelvin was preceded in death by his mother and father Lucille and Rev. James H. Stroud Sr.; his siblings James Henry Stroud Jr., Martin Lee Stroud, Jo Ann Mungo, and David Stroud; as well as his eldest son, Kelvin Marquis Thompson.

Kelvin leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter Sheena Baker, son Shamari Baker (Shaunda Baker), their mother and his partner of 46 years, Clarissa Baker; his grandchildren Shamara Baker, Shauna Baker, and Shakur Baker; mother of his eldest son, Lidia Thompson (Russell Glenn); his best friend, Eddie Simmons (Mitzie Simmons); as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family members both adopted and biological.
