Obituary

Mr. Kenneth Sherrod, 66 of Charlotte, passed away on May 3, 2019 at CMC-Main.

It must have been a thunderstorm on November 15, 1952 in Utica, New York, when the Lord brought Kenneth Leon Sherrod to Felix E. and Thelma D. Sherrod as their 4 th child. His nickname could have been "Thunder" because in life he lit up a room with his love, joy and laughter. He was serious about his work, serious about what he believed and serious about his family.

Kenny attended a number of public schools in Buffalo, NY including P.S. #15, #76 and # 53. He graduated from Seneca High School in 1971 with an electric science diploma.  Later, Kenny attended Buffalo State Teachers College (now SUNY Buffalo) for one semester. As one of the most social people in Buffalo, he brought the noise, that powerful energy, that only he could bring to the party. He didn't just dance, he got down!  He didn't just have the music, he had all the music…Funkadelics, Earth Wind and Fire… His parties were the place to be. He brought the hype!

Kenny joined the United States Air Force where he served one term in Vietnam, going to both Cambodia and Thailand, and was discharged January 9, 1976. In 1979, Kenny met his soulmate, dance partner, the love of his life, Rita Goggins. Since Kenny's favorite color was red, Christmas was the perfect time for their union. On December 27, 1986, they had a black-tie wedding celebrating the joy of the Christmas season and their love. As an expression of their love they had two children:  Kenneth Scott Sherrod and Whitney Kenita Goggins Sherrod Smith.

Kenny attended the Million Man March in 1995 and committed himself to his family and community with the same thunder of his youth. He gave his life to Christ on August 6th, 2006 and turned his his life towards serving the Lord and empowering young men and women to be active, engaging citizens.

Kenny worked as a truck driver for over 20 years and spent his free time loving on his friends and family.

Remember Kenny's favorite saying was: "You can't say you don't know the truth, when someone tells you".

He is preceded in death by his father Felix E. Sherrod and siblings Felix L. Sherrod and Helen Sherrod Bibb.

He is survived by his mother Thelma D. Sherrod, loving wife, Rita Goggins Sherrod, His children, Kenneth Scott Sherrod and Whitney Kenita Goggins Sherrod Smith (Demetrus Antuan Smith), six siblings: Merian Sherrod, Gilda Sherrod-Ali, Elgie Gaynell Sherrod, Brenda Mullin, Wanda Sherrod, Vincent Sherrod (Sydorna), Jan Jackson (Linda), Brenda Merritt Sherrod (sister in law), Shelia Goggins (sister in-law) and grandchildren, Keon Scott Sherrod, Kailis Simone Smith, Karson Cruz Smith & Karter Scott Sherrod and a host of nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
