Landis Benjamin Martin was born on August 18, 1956 in Harlem, New York to the late Lander Bennett and Hannah Martin. He departed this life on March 24, 2021 after a lengthy illness at his home in Charlotte, North Carolina. Landis lost his Mother at a very early age. He was raised in a loving home by his older sister Anna Martin-Daniels affectionately known as "Baby".
Landis was known to his family as "Bennie Boo" and to his friends as "Big Smoothie", because of his smooth dance moves and was light on his feet. Landis made his acting debut on the "Original Kings of Comedy Movie" grooving to the sounds of the late James Brown. Landis was a father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law and uncle.
Landis received his formal education in the New York Public School system in the Bronx, N.Y. graduated from Dewitt Clinton High School, class of 1974. He continued his thirst for knowledge at SUNY Sullivan Community College in Lock Sheldrake, New York. After college he entered the United States Army. He acquired the rank of E4 Specialist, with an honorable discharge. He returned to New York and there he met Terry Trowell who became his longtime girlfriend. They became the proud parents of their only son, Landis Benjamin Martin, II.
In New York, Landis was employed with Lehman Brothers Brokerage Firm on Wall Street as a Profit Officer. Lehman Brothers relocated Landis to their Washington, DC office to start a new division within the company. In Washington, DC he became a member of Union Temple Church. He was promoted with Prudential Financial in Vienna, VA. as a Financial Advisor (Vice President) in the profit margin division. He relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina where he was employed with Wells Fargo as a loan officer until his health began to decline. Landis also became a faithful member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church and a member of the Brotherhood Ministry, and a Gretter.
While on a golfing trip to North Carolina, with friends he met Kim Richardson. They started dating and were married for over ten years. Landis "LB" also relocated to Charlotte to live with his father and stepmother. Landis maintained a great relationship with both Kim and Terry LB's mother.
Landis's motto was to live life to the fullest, make each day on this earth count because tomorrow is not promised. Landis was very personable he never met a stranger. He enjoyed a good Cohiba cigar, a connoisseur of style and dress, and was the life of a party. He was well versed in all areas of life. Intelligent, loved a great political debate, an accomplished golfer who enjoyed outings with the "Boyz" Ray, Billy, Ron and Nate, and please don't forget his number one friend Rob. Landis, who always put GOD first and FAMILY second. Landis had a beautiful spirt and leaves us with fond memories of his life.
The family extends a special heart felt love to Ms. Michelle Smith for taking care of Landis until his death. You are truly an amazing gift from God and your love and dedication has not been unnoticed.
He is survived by his son Landis Benjamin Martin, II, Charlotte, NC; granddaughter Amira Martin, Kansas City, Kansas; sisters Anna Martin-Daniels, Bronx, New York; Lelia Bell Johnson (Colmar Comar) Fayetteville, NC; Donna Lynn Martin, Bronx, New York; Matthew Martin (Rebecca) Piscataway, New Jersey; Aunt Henrietta Martin, Raleigh, NC; Godson Matthew Nathaniel Martin (Tashana) and Goddaughter Melanina Marlaina Hana-Gladise Martin; Host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; Special friends: Robert Lindsey, Syrana(Rana) Smith, Ray Brown, Robert Lindsey, William Bernard, Tamika Lowy, and Michelle Smith.
