Lavenia "Lou" Montgomery is from Newark, NJ and was born on August 10,1934 and departed from us on July 5,2022. She was the eldest of eight children born to the late John and Elsie Montgomery. Her siblings who proceeded her in death are three brothers John Montgomery, Albert Montgomery (Edna-deceased), Ronald Montgomery (Carol-deceased) and two sisters Vera Montgomery and Phyllis Montgomery (Edgar Hawthorne-deceased).
She attended and graduated from Newton Street Elementary and Junior High School then continued on to Essex County Vocational and Technical school where she studied beauty. In 1952, she graduated with an Operator's License. Shortly after graduating, she moved with her grandparents to Asbury Park and pursued her hand at domestic work along side her grandmother. During her domestic tenure, she cared for the Dempsey family for many years. Not wanting to stay in the domestic field she decided to pursue her hand in something she was passionate in; NURSING. She attended nursing school and graduated with her LPN. She was successful in securing a job in her field of nursing at Jersey Shore Medical Center where she retired after 23 years of service . She joined St. Stephen A.M.E. Zion Church in 1957, and as an adult she accepted Christ and chose to remain at St. Stephen. She served faithfully for more than 50 years. She worked on the First Aid Ministry, The Goodwin Choraleers, and The Jewels of Zion. She also served at the President of the Woman's Home and Oversea Missionary Society. Lavenia was in charge of six missionary departments under the missionary umbrella. She held the position for more than 15 years. She could often be seen attending many local meetings and attending national conventions. She enjoyed going to extended ministries as well. She was meticulous in her work and loved doing the Lord's work. Lavenia had a genuine love and concern for others. And her favorite past-time was Baseball, she was a fan favorite of the Dodgers and Yankees in her early years, however for the past 20 years or more she remained a dedicated fan to the NY York Mets!
Lavenia leaves her two sisters to cherish her memory, Bonita Ezell (Lester, Sr.-deceased) and Irene Montgomery Martin(Theodore-deceased) and a host of nieces, nephews, her Goddaughter Kim Myrick, relatives and friends.
