Leon Alexander Berry, 87 of Charlotte, passed away on Monday, December 20, 2021, at McWhorter Hospice, Monroe, North Carolina. He was born on August 26, 1934, in Huntersville, North Carolina. He was the son of the late Leon Berry and Ila Pharr Berry. He was one of nine children.
Leon was known to all of his family and friends as "Mutt." He was an outgoing man and he never met a stranger. He always treated everyone like family.
He met his girlfriend Carolyn Johnson in Charlotte. She then moved to Queens, New York to go to college. He followed her there and they were married. They had six children. They later moved back to Charlotte where he worked for Almond and Grading Company where he drove and operated a bulldozer for many years and then he retired.
In addition to his parents, Leon was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn; two daughters, Iris D. Pompey and Sandra A. Berry; one grandson, Donta' D. Berry; two brothers, David (Grace) and Denny (Sarah); and three sisters Janie Mae (Dewitt), Dora (Sherman), and Ruth (Oscar).
He leaves to cherish his memory four children, Tony A. Berry, Pamela Berry Lee (Larry), Cheryl B. Adams and Kenneth Berry; thirteen grandchildren, Quency Berry, Chiquitta Pickett (Terry), Vernard Pompey (Pam), Quentil Pompay, Brandon Pompay, LaDarious Berry, Lakeshia Lee (Toya), Norman Adams, Jr., Kenya Berry, John T. Foster (Jenae), Brittany Berry (Lonnie), Breanna Hanton (Darious) and Terrell R. Berry; son-in-law, Bernard Pompey; seventeen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Cornelia Henderson and Elizabeth Tate (Willie) and one brother, Hugh Berry (Dot); and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
