Mr. Leonard. E. Mauney, 93, of Charlotte, NC departed this life on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at his residence.
Mr. Leonard Edward Mauney, 93, son of the late Jacob "Jake" Mauney and Grace Sifford Mauney, was born November 19, 1929, in the Gaston County portion of Kings Mountain, North Carolina. Early Saturday afternoon, October 7, 2023, Leonard, while down for a nap, transitioned and entered into eternal life.
In 1934, when Leonard was only 5 years old, his father Jake died. His mother Grace then moved back home to the Dixie community of Mecklenburg County, with her four young children, to live with her parents, Edward and Lillian Sifford. Leonard's passing marks the end of a generation in the Mauney family as he was the last surviving grandchild of his paternal grandparents, Wesley and Naomi Mauney, who had a total of 75 grandchildren.
In 1948, Leonard graduated from Plato Price High School. He drove a school bus for the school beginning at age 14. Leonard also played the trumpet in the school band. Some years later, he did further studies at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK to study Mechanical Engineering.

Leonard was actively involved with his family reunions – the Sifford Reunion, the Mauney-Wellmon Reunion and he was a past president of the Roberts, Borders, Mauney, Howell, Briggs & Related Families Reunion. He and his wife Mamie Lee hosted many Mauney Wellmon reunions at their home. As a great story teller, he delighted family and friends with interesting stories about his life's journey and about family history. His smile lit up the room.
Leonard enjoyed traveling with his wife and family as they vacationed all over the continental United States. He and Mamie Lee also traveled to Hawaii, China, Bermuda and the Bahamas.
He enjoyed farming. He delighted in growing fruits and vegetables which he shared with relatives and friends. Leonard was very talented and knowledgeable about many things. He was a master mechanic, carpenter and general contractor. Leonard never hesitated to help someone who was in need.
