IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Leroy Samuel
Polk, Sr.
October 4, 1932 – October 22, 2022
On Friday October 21, 2022, Leroy Samuel Polk, Sr., 90, was called on his heavenly journey. Known by family and close friends as "BAM", Leroy was the son of the late Charles Haywood and Ruth Polk. He was also the great-nephew of the late Leroy Grier and Arthur S. Grier, the founders of the Grier Heights Community. He was the namesake of his great-uncle, Leroy Grier.
Leroy attended Billingsville Elementary School, Mary Potter Boarding School and graduated with a high school diploma from Second Ward. He later pursued a collegiate experience at Johnson C. Smith and further went on to successfully complete a tour in the United States Airforce.
As an avid golfer, Leroy was a member of the Par Busters Golf Group. He was a strong community activist and was a founding member of the Dukes Social Club and East Side Council, which was an organization whose mission was civil rights change. He passionately participated in Grier Heights community initiatives and the Grier Heights Presbyterian Church. During his early years, Leroy was a community baseball coach.
Leroy maintained an entrepreneurial spirit as his career journey began with ownership of a gas station and co-owner of Grier Heights Shopping Center. He later developed a trade for brick masonry and had an extensive career with Rea Construction where he retired as a foreman after decades of service.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Leroy S. Polk Jr.; daughter, Terri Polk; sister, Carrie Bell (CB) Alexander and brother, James K. Polk (Bootsie).
He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife, Delores Polk; sister, Doretha Dunn; daughter, Linda Clark; daughter, Gina Polk; son, Darius Deese (Marvette); daughter, Delores Goodson; and a beloved godson, David Michael Bennet (Pamela). He leaves behind ten grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Leroy was a kind, resilient and extremely funny man. He was bad at remembering names so he always referred to everyone as "Bo". And if you ever asked him how he was doing his response would be:
"FINE AND DANDY SWEET LIKE CANDY"!!!!!!!!
