Mrs. Lillie Steele Polk, 79, of Charlotte NC departed this life on Thursday, September 14, 2023 at Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Aldersgate.
Mrs. Lillie Viola Steele Polk, daughter of the late Ollie Mae Smith Steele and William F. Steele, was born in Mecklenburg County on June 16, 1944. She departed this life on Thursday, September 14, 2023, at Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Aldersgate.
Mrs. Polk attended Newell Elementary and J.H. Gunn High School. She enhanced her education at Central Piedmont Community College. She worked at Atrium Health (formerly Charlotte Memorial Hospital and formerly Carolinas Medical Center) for 34½ years of service until her retirement.
Mrs. Polk was a member of New Hampton Presbyterian Church, and later transferred her membership to Grier Heights Presbyterian Church where she has been a member for more than 40 years.
Many have heard her say, "I love God and my church."
She demonstrated her love for the church repeatedly in so many ways, such as serving as an Ordained Elder and Deacon, Trustee, Usher Board Chairperson, Gospel and Senior Choir Member, Worship Committee member, Vacation Bible School Assistant Teacher, Sunday School Assistant Teacher, 1996 Woman of the Year, Vice Moderator Presbyterian Women and a Hospitality Committee member for years. She was the chairperson in charge of preparing the elements for Communion. In 2008, she was presented the Honorary Life Membership of the Grier Heights Presbyterian Women Organization.
She was preceded in death by her son, Phillip Steele; sister, Armanda Alexander; brothers, John Steele, Marshall Steele, Robert Steele and Willie Steele.
Mrs. Polk leaves cherished memories with her husband, Onis W. Polk; her sons, Reginal, Gregory and Rodney; stepdaughter, Veraline Corbett; four daughters-in-law; nine grandchildren; twenty great-great-grandchildren; one aunt, Rachel Edwards; sisters, Frances Mackins and Flora Pegues; brother, Calvin Lewis Steele (Helena); brothers-in-law, Joe, Steve and Teddy Polk; goddaughter, Mrs. Sherry White; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
