Obituary

Louis Jeremiah Caldwell, the 5th child of the late David Elijah Caldwell and Uzella Blake Caldwell, was born on February 23, 1927 in the Shuffletown community just west of Charlotte.   He transitioned to his eternal rest on Monday, February 15, 2016 after a brief illness.

Louis attended Lawing Elementary School and graduated from Plato Price High School in 1944.   After high school, he worked for the War Department in Washington, D.C. until he was called into the Armed services.   At the completion of basic training, he served in Japan, receiving an honorary discharge from the US Army in 1947.

He married the late Mrs. Virginia Wrotten Caldwell in 1948, his wife of 43 years before her untimely death in 1991. They became the proud parents of the late Reginald Caldwell and Calvin Caldwell.

After serving his country, Louis became an apprentice to learn the craft of brick masonry. By 1966, this Master Brick Mason started his own business – Louis Caldwell Construction, a business built by word of mouth and referrals.

In August 1996, he married Celessie Avery Collins, a former classmate at Plato Price. Through that union, Louis gained two daughters, Deloris Collins Chisley and Barbara J. Ellis.

Constant throughout his life was his dedication to his family, his church and his service to God's people. For over 70 years, he was a member of Wilson Heights Church of God, serving as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher, Trustee, and helped build the current multi-purpose facility of Wilson Heights.   Louis provided leadership and service to the Church of God across the state of North Carolina. For decades, he has also been a member of Gideons International.

His jovial, joking spirit and passion for life and serving God's people leaves his family with much to thank God for. He is survived by his wife Celessie Avery Collins-Caldwell; his son Calvin Caldwell; daughters-in-law Mary Caldwell and Sally Caldwell; step daughters Deloris Chisley and Barbara (Wayne) Ellis; brothers Homer (Elaine) Caldwell of Orlando, FL and Harry (Hattie) Caldwell of Houston, TX; sisters Alberta Brown and Helen Haynes, both of Kansas City, MO; grandchildren Reginald, Jr., Pamela Caldwell and Brian (Tanya) Ellis; four great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. His son Reginald and brothers David Henry and Robert and sister Mary Martha Jackson predeceased him.

Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at Ebenezer Baptist Church.  Visitation will begin at 12 noon until time of service.  Burial will follow at the National Cemetery, Salisbury on Monday, February 22, 2016 at 9:00 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wilson Heights Church of God Building Fund, 2137 B Street, Charlotte, NC 28216
