Evangelist Lovie Lou Slaughter, of Charlotte, NC, peacefully departed this world at the age of 87, on Saturday, July 20, 2024.
Lovie was the first of seven children to David and Hettie Williams, born on July 21, 1936, in Gordon, Alabama. She led a life filled with faith, love, and creativity. Lovie was the cherished wife of the late Reverend Alphonso Slaughter, with whom she shared 41 years of marital bliss. They were united in holy matrimony on March 16th, 1958, when Lovie was 22 years old. Together, they raised four children - two boys and two girls - and built a life rooted in love and devotion. In addition to her roles as a wife and mother, Lovie was a talented writer and poet. She penned a book of poetry titled "Pocket Full of Miracles," capturing the beauty and wonder of life in her words.
Lovie's creativity extended to music as well; she wrote songs for a singing group comprised of herself and her five sisters and two brothers-in-law. The group, initially known as The Happy Land Singers, later adopted the name The Williams Sisters, enchanting audiences with their harmonious melodies.
Lovie's journey of faith began at a young age when she was saved, sanctified, and filled with the Holy Ghost. She felt the call to ministry in her teenage years and delivered her first sermon at the request of her pastor. Embracing her calling, Lovie became an evangelist in her twenties, spreading the message of God's love near and far.
Alongside her husband, Reverend Alphonso Slaughter, Lovie served as the First Lady of the Wabasso Church of God in Wabasso, Florida, before relocating to Charlotte, NC in 1984. In Charlotte, they assumed leadership roles as Pastor and First Lady at the 15th Street Church of God, shepherding the congregation with grace and compassion.
Lovie later became a dedicated member of Blessed Assurance Church in Kannapolis, NC for many years until 2011, where the Senior Pastor is Apostle David L. Smith and First Lady Dr. Linda S. Smith. Lovie also volunteered in the nurse guild at New Myers Chapel. In 2011, she transitioned to become the founding member of River of Life CFM. There she held the esteemed position of Mother of the Church, pastored by Senior Pastor Apostle LynDarrin Slaughter and Co-Pastor Phyllis Bost Slaughter.
Lovie was the epitome of a devoted wife, mother, sister, and friend. Her family always came first, and her love knew no bounds. Her legacy of faith, resilience, and creativity will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Lovie was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend Alphonso Slaughter; her daughter, Debra Ann Slaughter; her father, David Williams; her mother, Hettie Williams; her two brothers, Fred Williams and Eugene Williams, and her two sisters, Bernice Sesler and Annie Doris Worsely.
