Obituary

Mrs. Lucille Fuiell, 99, of Charlotte, NC, departed this life on Monday, September 9, 2024, at Mecklenburg Rehab Center.

Lucille Lewis Fuiell was born in White Oak, North Carolina on September 23, 1924.  She was the daughter of the late Homer and Cora Bell Lewis.  She was united in marriage to Johnny Fuiell, who preceded her in death.  Lucille lived a long and blessed life until her passing on Monday, September 9, 2024.  She was within two weeks of her 100th birthday.

Lucille was many things to many people, known as Mother, Sister, Big-Mommy, Grandma, Aunt "Cill" or Aunt Lucille, or just Ms. Lucille to friends.  Her upbringing on her parents' farm instilled in her a profound work ethic and a nurturing spirit that she carried throughout her life.  She spent over four decades in the nursing profession, providing compassionate care to countless individuals.  She received her nursing degree from the Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing in Charlotte; she worked for Good Samaritan Hospital for five years.  Good Samaritan Hospital was the first private hospital in North Carolina, established to treat Black patients.  Lucille retired from Carolinas Medical Center Rehab after 35 years of service.

She was a longtime and deeply involved member of the First Baptist Church-West in Charlotte, NC.  Lucille loved her church community.  Her faith was an integral part of her life, offering her comfort and a way to connect with others.  She had a lovely smile, a good heart, and a warm personality felt by all in her presence.

Her hobbies included fishing, gardening, and cooking, which made her a celebrity in her family.  She was especially known for her delectable "Pound Cakes."  Lucille's home was a hub of warmth and hospitality, cherished by all who entered.

In addition to her parents and husband, Lucille was preceded in death by her two sons, Robert Johnson and Joe Martin, Jr.; sisters, Grace Bell Lewis, Addie Lee Burton-Lewis, Sudie Mae Young, Lula Mae Lewis, and Laural Allen Autry; brothers, Earnest, James, Edie, and Raymond Lewis; and grandson, Kim Mobley.

Lucille is survived by her daughter, Mable Mobley; daughter-in-law, Deloris M. Alexander; grandchildren, Shawn Mobley (Megan) of New York, Joe Martin (Tracy), Regina Martin, Michell Shaw (Neal), and Tiffanie M. Jones, all of Charlotte, NC; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Lucille's legacy of love, kindness, and culinary prowess will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.  Her life was a testament to the beauty of a simple smile and the enduring power of a warm, open heart.
