Obituary

Madgalene Laws, 89 of Charlotte, being obedient to the will of the Master, she answered the call and went quietly to sleep at the Charlotte Rehabilitation Center on Friday morning.  For those of us who are blessed with an earthly existence, there is a time to be born and a time to die.  The earthly life of Magdalene G. Laws, affectionately known as "Easter," began March 4, 1931.

Magdalene was born to Catherine Sanders Gregory and James Gregory in Chester, South Carolina.  Her parents and five siblings: Alonzo Gregory, Rachel Robinson, Maggie Land, James Gregory, Jr., and Louise Cureton preceded her in death.

Confessing Christ at an early age, she joined Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church in Chester, SC.  She received her early education in the Chester County public school system.  As a child she developed a strong work ethic which remained with her until she retired.  In search of a better life, Magdalene migrated from South Carolina to New York where she was employed for a number of years.  She decided to relocate to Charlotte, where she met and married the love of her life, James Laws, who was loyal and devoted husband who loved and cared for her until her heavenly departure.

She obtained employment with Radiator Specialty Company for many years, and later with the Park Hotel, and Harris Personnel Company in Charlotte.

Upon returning to Charlotte, Magdalene united with the Little Rock A.M.E. Zion Church where she became a devoted and active member until her health no longer permitted.  She loved her Pastor and Church favorite Scriptures is the Twenty Third Psalm.  She also had the greatest love for her family.

To know Magdalene was to love her.  She will truly be missed by her family and friends who are comforted in knowing that she has a permanent resting place with no more sickness, only love and eternal peace.

Magdalene leaves to cherish many fond memories:  her devoted husband, James; 3 Sons: Filmore F. Gregory (Essie) Brooklyn, NY; Charles A. Gregory, Winston-Salem, NC; Stanley Gregory, Charlotte, NC; a Daughter, Cathy L. Maxwell, Charlotte, NC; a Stepson, William Monk, Maryland; a Cousin that she loved as a Son, Sam Sanders (Anita) Charlotte, NC; Sister-in-law, Geraldine Carrington (Clifton), Durham, NC; 4 Brothers-in-law,  Melvin Laws, Charlotte, NC; Clyde Laws (Tressa); Joe Laws, Robert Laws (Norsena) all of Durham, NC; 12 Grandchildren, 20 Great-Grandchildren, and a host of Cousins, Nieces, Nephews and other family members that included a dear friend that she also referred to as her daughter, Ethel Harris of Rock Hill, SC.
