Maggie Lean McGill, the eighth child and fourth daughter born to Leonard Clarence and Jerdie Neal McGill, departed this life on Monday, March 23, 2020. Mag, as she was affectionately called, was born on April 18, 1937.
Mag, graduated from J. H. Gunn High School in 1954. Though she never married nor had children of her own, she proclaimed herself the greatest surrogate mother to her nieces and nephews and the three generations that followed. Each of her thirty nieces and nephews shared her selfless opinion.
As a teenager, Mag began her work career as a nanny for Roy White, who owned the only local grocery store in Mint Hill, NC. She worked at this occupation for over 15 years until she landed a position with General Textile in Charlotte, NC where she rose through the ranks and became manager of the company. So admired and trusted was she in the company ranks that she was chosen for a leadership position and began commuting to Columbia, SC to open and manage that city's branch of the company. About 1969, the General Textile plants closed and Mag moved on to the campus of UNC-Charlotte's housekeeping department. A diligent and dedicated worker, she soon was named Supervisor of the night shift where she remained until her retirement in 2002.
Mag leaves so many cherish memories for us all, especially her joy of dancing. Any tune, whether religious or smooth jazz, would start her to smiling and swaying to the rhythm.
She leaves to mourn her death, a special group of family that she raised as her own; niece, Naomi Linder (William); nephew, Anthony Lee, a great-grand-nephew, Mario Crowe and two great-grand-nieces, Shetara and Shawdai Crowe. She also leaves to mourn a cherished sister-in-law, Katie McGill.
She was preceded in death by her parents, nine siblings; John Thomas, Dolether, Leonard Hanson, Lennie Bell, Alberta, Clarence, Benzell and Elezer McGill and Pearl Lee, who passed seven days before her. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews and cousins.
