Obituary

Known to all simply as "Maggie," she was born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Archie Nance Sr. on May 5, 1939 in Lincoln County, North Carolina. With her family moving to Charlotte during the 50's, she attended local area schools graduating from Plato Price High School in 1957. Her career as a caretaker began in the early 60's when she became a nurse assistant and LPN working at what was formally known as the Sisters of Mercy Hospital in the Pediatrics and Central Services Department. She later worked at Community Hospital and Charlotte Rehabilitation Hospital for well over 20years. Maggie held five loves - a love of family, caretaking, church, community, and her class members from Plato Price. These bought her great joy and she participated in each with great passion. The passion for family and caretaking was exhibited through the care and nurture she provided for each family member, be it care for Myrtle, her twin sister as she began to fall to declining health, or as she lived with and provided a lifetime of care to her older sister Mildred "Irene" who phenomenally defied all odds after a health crisis and continues to flourish. Her passion was further exhibited as a caregiver as she lived with and cared for simultaneously their aging parents stricken with Alzheimer's for approximately 8 years in the home to her final caretaking assignment with her sister Betty in their assisted living facility. She was a supportive and encouraging sister to her brothers Archie, Jr. "Brother" and Mike. She loved chatting on the telephone with her sister Bernice and brother-in-law Sam who live in the Bronx often chatting of her late sister Beulah. Time shopping with Paula and Aunt Leatha filled her early years of retirement. Her love for her only child Dana was not something to be tested as she was a devoted mother. This passion paled in comparison to her love for her grandchildren Brittany, Jordan, and Danelle. Passion for church was seen as she served at Rock Hill United Methodist Church in various capacities, including working as secretary on The Council on Ministries, United Methodist Women, acting as a delegate to the Western North Carolina Conference, participating as a soprano in the choir, helping with the annual Heart Sister Christmas gathering and the 3rdSunday in May activities, and her voice shall forever ring in our ears as she read the weekly church announcements. Late in life, she began to share at Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Charlotte where she made new friends who share in the loss of our beloved. Passion for Community and her cherished Class Members of Plato Price of 1957 was seen in many different ways, for instance, pestering a local city councilman who was personally known to her to ensure the grass was cut at the corner of Sunset and Statesville Ave in a timely manner, to decorating the entire Charlotte Spring Sr. Apartment Community with garland and red bows for Christmas, and her loyal friendship with every resident as she served as the Community Activities Coordinator. In this capacity, she assisted the staff and residents in any way she could. The times she spent at Saturday morning class reunion meetings at the Mother House, or singing with her class during reunions, to lording over Dana to proof and print her meeting minutes, brought a fullness and completeness to her life that she often recounted with joy. Maggie's family will miss her presence, the elegant stature, the graceful gait, and the feisty banter. In all of this, it is understood that having her in our lives allowed us to participate in a Master Class on faith, endurance, stamina and love. Mrs. Smith passed on April 21, 2015 at Levine & Dickson Hospice House, Huntersville, N C. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 12 noon at Rock Hill United Methodist Church, 2303 Old Plank Road, Stanley, NC. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 12 noon. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
