Brother Major Simmons Sr., passed from this life to the bosom of Christ on Thursday, July 16, 2020 at his home in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was bedridden and taken care of by his two sons and home healthcare for the last two years of his life.
Major was the son of the late James T. and Zula Simmons. He was born in Lincoln Georgia, April 13, 1922. Very early in his childhood his birth mother passed away leaving his father to remarry. His stepmother Pearline Simmons raised him and his siblings into adulthood showing love and respect as if they were biologically hers.
Major was educated in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system. He was united in holy matrimony to Mary Elizabeth Hall and their love and devotion to each other lasted over 40 years until her passing. Their union produced two sons. After leaving Charlotte in the mid 1940s, he moved to Camden, New Jersey where he worked at the shipyard and Campbell Soup company. He eventually moved back to Charlotte in 1949. He had never built anything before. The Lord had given him a keen eye to detail and he was very observant. His skills at carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical and roofing led him to believe he could build a house himself. With God's help he built the home he lived in from the ground up. He retired as lead maintenance person at Johnson C. Smith.
Brother Major was a faithful member of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith for over 65 years. As maintenance supervisor he saved the church thousands of dollars in repair and building costs. He also raised fresh vegetables on his land which he donated to the saints. He attended church on a regular basis until his health would't allow him. Even after being bedridden he supported the church financially.
Major was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Hall Simmons; brother, James P. Simmons; sister Willie M. Simmons Ayers; brother, Henry Simmons; and brother Mose Simmons..
He leaves to cherish his memories his two sons, Timotheus Sherrod Simmons (LaRita) and Major Simmons Jr. (Debbie), granddaughter Jarin, a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and a beautiful church family.
