Margaret Denise Brown was born on March 29, 1956, to Lucille and Bernard Brown, and was named after her mother's eldest sister, Margaret Mattie Hall. Denise had an older brother, Bernard Brown, Jr., who predeceased her in 2015. The Brown family were members of Simpson United Methodist Church and Denise was baptized there. Denise had a strong spiritual foundation that she relied upon throughout her life.
Her family always referred to her as "Denise," and occasionally as "Niecy." From an early age, Denise had a love of music, specifically the piano. She began taking piano lessons from Ms. Blanche Oliver until her graduation from high school.
Both parents were educators in CMS, and they decided to enroll her in Catholic school that continued thru her graduation from Charlotte Catholic High School. Denise decided that Winston-Salem State University was her college choice, and she received her BA in Music Education with a concentration in piano.
She returned to Charlotte briefly, and then chose to enter graduate school at North Carolina Central University in Durham. She received her MLS (Masters in Library Science) and returned to Charlotte to be employed at Johnson C. Smith University as a Media Specialist in the Library. Denise delayed pledging during her undergraduate years, due to her class schedule, and pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. thru the Charlotte Graduate Chapter when she returned.
Denise did marry, divorcing later, and starting a new career. After leaving JCSU, she was employed with CMS, working as a Media Specialist in several elementary schools, and spending 18 years at Garinger High School. At Garinger, she was a Media Specialist where she assisted students with their educational projects, preparation for college, and teaching classes. After retiring from CMS, Denise made the decision to go back to work, and earned another certification to become a Meck Pre-K teacher at Child Care Network for several years. With her summers off, she enjoyed traveling and visiting family who lived out of state. She was an avid jazz lover attending outdoor concerts and local venues.
Denise decided to work part-time in her retirement, and was employed with Children of America, a daycare center in the University area near her home.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her nephew, Derrick Brown; aunt, Elaine Brown; cousins, Regina Frazier and John Smotherson; extended family members; friends, the Tammy Holloway family; and best friend, Bonita Caldwell.
