Margie Ree Best, daughter of the late Robert Lee Mitchell Sr. and Gonzella Mitchell, was born on August 2, 1946 in Pitt County, North Carolina, and entered heavenly rest on August 23, 2023 at Novant – Main.
Margie relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina in 1976. She and beloved husband, Walter Best, were married for 45 of the 52 years they were together. She was employed at Lion Services, Inc. for many years until she retired.
Margie had a personality like no other. She was such a friendly, warm-hearted person who found joy in sewing, cooking, and feeding anyone that stopped by – her famous pineapple upside-down cake, chicken salad, and delicious potato salad would always make you want to return. Her home was always the family meeting place, because being around Margie always provided a welcoming atmosphere full of love, laughs, and food.
Margie was the matriarch and heart of the family. She took pride in being able to showcase her family to anyone she encountered. She never met a stranger who didn't become a friend, and she found a way to connect with people and make her way into their hearts through her storytelling. Her smile was captivating and her laughter contagious; she truly lit up the room.
Margie was preceded in death by her parents, brother Raymond Mitchell, sister Rebecca Mitchell, son in-law Roscoe Wright, and great-granddaughter Mckinlee Hilliard.
Margie leaves to cherish her many wonderful memories; her husband Walter Best; her six children, daughters Evelyn Wright, Satonya Best, and sons Fred (Catherine) Harris, Allen Harris, Jeffery (Michelle) Harris, and Jamie Best; her five siblings, brothers Robert Mitchell Jr., Edward Mitchell Sr., and sisters Mary Baker, Betty(Paul) Taylor, and Martha (Edward) Reese; her 22 grandchildren, Shana Harris, Roscoe Wright Jr., Aaliyah Wright, Tyeisha McGriff, Ty'Jay McGriff Jr., Ayin Funderburk, Cameo (Vevus) Harris-Womack, Alicia (Didymus) Kilpatrick, Arrington (Geronimo) Caldwell, Chantae (Phillips) Harris Metz, LaQuisha Harris, Allen Ray Harris Jr., Kiara Harris, Bryan Moore, J'Xong-Ashley Harris, Jeloni Harris, Miles Hannon, Jaemi Harris, Kristin Hannon, Andrea Shular, Dontarious Cowans, and Dytoine Best; her 25 great grandchildren; Ani Harris, Asi Harris, Mylaysia Taylor-Wright, Kyng Bess, Ryan McGriff, Riley McGriff, Ceá Johnson, Seven Womack, Sanaa Womack, Ciana Womack, LaShawn Handy, Echon Handy, Alexzia Handy, Chase Caldwell, Jeffrey Perry, Triston Perry, Cameron Metz, Gabriel Metz, Harrison Hilliard, Caleb Harris, Brian Moore Jr., Chloe Moore, Nova Morris, Leila Hannon, and Jream Harris; her great-great grandchild Michael-Jae Handy; and a host of loving relatives and friends, including her uncle James Flemming and aunt Katherine Mitchell.
