Marguerite was born on March 12, 1939, in East Orange, N.J. She was the 7th child of eight from the union of Marguerite Elizabeth Goode and Luther Isaac Wallace.
Marguerite spent her younger years living in Maticoke, Maryland where she resided with her late Aunt Pauline and Late Uncle Bud Wallace. She eventually returned to (Verona) New Jersey to live with her parents and siblings. The family ultimately moved to Orange , New Jersey where Marguerite graduate from Orange High School in 1956.
Marguerite married the late Donald Lee Clowers in August of 1956. From this union they had five children Donald, Jr., Carol, Marguerite, Dawn, and Patricia. Marguerite and Donald purchased a home in Newark, New Jersey where they planned to raise their family. After the death of their husband, Marguerite went on to raise her five children alone. She continued to work, and she continued her education earning an Associate degree from Essex County College; she then studied Criminology at John Jay of Criminal Justice of New York City. While in school, Marguerite resigned from the United States Postal Service and began a career as a Social Worker for the county of Essex. After being told that her heart was too big, and she couldn't save all her clients her superior advised Marguerite that she should consider a new path.
This advice led Marguerite to what would be a rewarding career in law, Marguerite became a Corrections Office at the Essex County Jail in Caldwell, New Jersey and eventually moved to the facility in Newark, New Jersey. During her employment at the Essex County Jail, Marguerite was skipped over for promotion after promotion. Promotions which were given to men that scored lower on the promotional exams than she. Marguerite fought for her respective promotions, and she won! Marguerite Elizabeth Clowers, was now Sergeant Clowers; she became a trailblazer for other women to be promoted. Marguerite retired as a Lieutenant from Newark's Essex County Jail.
After retirement, Marguerite continued to work as a Nannie where she mentored Nicole Danielle who is now a forever family friend. After her employment with the Danielle's ended; she went to work for her favorite cup of java joining Dunkin Donuts team. After fully retiring in 2002, Marguerite relocated between North Carolina and Florida and returned to North Carolina where she spent her final years.
Marguerite loved to crochet; there was not a moment that she didn't have a bag of yearn and a crocheting needle in her hand, making Afghans for her family and friends. Marguerite was an avid reader; she loved a good murder mystery. While Marguerite was crocheting and cooking dinner for her family, you could hear the television in the background as she belted out answers before the contestants on Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. Until her death, Marguerite watched anything on Turner Classic Movies. Speaking of the voice, Marguerite also had a beautiful singing voice, her euphonic voice would blend in any genre, however, she mostly loved gospel. Other hobbies of Marguerite were card playing with her siblings and friends, something they took seriously; it seemed at times they had their own language when the card games were played, Marguerite loved going to Atlantic City, New Jersey and Hollywood, Florida casinos and she also joined the cruise traveling club so that she could slot machine, soak in the sun, sleep, and repeat.
Marguerite affectionately known as Nana, for her grandchildren quickly became Nana to everyone. Marguerite mentored many people. She allowed some to seek refuge when they had nowhere to go and she fed others when they were hungry. She also let multiple bands rehearse in her basement several times a week just to keep the young people off the street.
Marguerite was preceded in death by her parents MArguerite Goode and Luther Wallace, her sisters Dorah HArris, and Kathleen Garrison, brother Luther Wallace, Jr., and granddaughter Jamila Mayer.
She is survived by her her darling sister, Marlene Anderson, and brother-in-law Howard "Butch" Anderson, her cherished children, Donald Lee Clowers, Jr. (Vicky), Carol Clowers (Michael), Marguerite Brown (Rodney), Dawn Lemon (Derrick), and Patricia Clowers (Damien), her beloved grandchildren Jamal (Melinda), Shaheed (Amirah), Haneef, Akil, Hakimah, Qiana (Kyree), Lorenzo (Donisha), Troy (Stephanie), Antuoine (Bridgette), Taylor, Nicole (Eric, Xavion, Jhaerhue, and Mihadm treasured great-grandchildren, Jackson, Kamrin, Jaylen, Gabriella, Jayda, Alanah, Erick, Arianna, Gianna, James, Elisia, Sophia, Iaisya, Kauryon, Kamora, Khayla, Ty'Aisha, Talayah, Jordyn, Derrick, Khloe, Kenzie, Isabela, Myles, Mason, and Memphis. Marguerite had a grand relationship with her sons-in-laws Rodney, Derrick, and Michael and daughter-in-law Vicky. Marguerite had an impact on those around her but now her job is done and she is at rest.
