Obituary

Marguerite Victoria Geter Ellison was born November 6, 1928 in Charleston, South Carolina. At a very early age, her family migrated north where she was raised in Harlem and the Bronx, NY by her parents, William and Vermena Geter. She was a true New Yorker in every sense of the word
and loved her life in the "Big City." In her mid-twenties, she married Arthur Ellison Sr. of Charleston and returned to her roots in her hometown. She was sad to leave New York but was surrounded in Charleston by her many aunts, uncles, and cousins who loved and adored her. From her union with Arthur came four children, Arthur Jr., Dawn, Kevin, and Marc. She loved caring for her family and provided big, hot meals, a spotless home, and endless love. Marguerite passed to eternal life on Monday, July 27, 2020.

Marguerite lived in Charleston for several decades and was employed by the Charleston County School System as a teacher's assistant for over 10
years. She loved her job but in 1983 Marguerite moved to Atlanta for a fresh start and new adventures. She joined her two sons, Artie and Marc in Atlanta and was later joined by Dawn, who was residing in New York. Meanwhile, Kevin had established himself in Miami, FL. She always lived her life vicariously through her children. Their victories were her victories, and their disappointments were hers as well. But she was always there for them, providing love, support, and guidance. She was their biggest fan.

In 1992, Marguerite lost her beloved son, Kevin. Her strength amazed those around her as she dealt with her grief with grace and dignity. She always said that there was nothing worse than outliving your own child. Nonetheless, she stood as a beacon of comfort to many, including her own family. She was strong and her faith was endless. All who knew her, loved her. Her sense of humor and infectious laugh were a delight. Several people remember how she opened her doors and allowed them to reside in her home until they landed on their feet. She had a big heart and donated to many charities and causes that were close to her heart. In the high rise development where she lived in Atlanta for over 20 years, she stayed busy preparing meals for the sickly, running errands for those who could not get out, and escorting friends to doctor's appointments.
She will be dearly missed by her children, family and those who had the honor and privilege of knowing her.

She is survived by her children, Arthur Jr., Dawn, and Marc; her sister, Dolores Geter Huntington of Queens, NY; her former husband, Arthur Ellison Sr.; and eight grandchildren, Gabrielle and Genny Ellison, Jordan, Neil and Cameron Ellison, and Paige, Brandon, and William Hawthorne. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
