Marvin Orlando Grigsby, transitioned to eternal rest on Saturday, December 10, 2022 at the age of 92.
The youngest of four children, Marvin was born in Winston-Salem on October 12, 1930 to Jefferson Eugene Grigsby, Sr. and Purry Dixon Grigsby. The family moved to Charlotte when Marvin was two years old. He was enrolled in the Charlotte city school system, later graduating from West Charlotte High School. He then attended West Virginia State College where he received his degree in Industrial Engineering. He later received his Masters in Engineering from Ohio State University. Following graduation, he served in the United States Army as a First Lieutenant stationed in Japan during the Korean War.
Marvin returned to Charlotte and married the love of his life, Mildred Yvonne Richardson in 1958. To this union were born three daughters: Pamela, Kimberly, and Linda.
Marvin began his engineering career at McDonald Douglas Aircraft in Charlotte until its closure. He then began working at Lockheed Aircraft in Marietta, Georgia as one of the few African American aerospace engineers of that time. He was proudly part of the team designing the Apollo 13 spacecraft and various military and civilian airplanes. He also worked in Southern California for a period of time as part of Lockheed's engineering special design team. Marvin traveled from Georgia to Charlotte for over 25 years until his retirement in 1990.
Marvin was a lifelong member of First United Presbyterian Church and a long standing member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He also enjoyed outings with the Epicurean Club with Mildred and their friends.
Marvin is preceded in death by his wife Mildred and daughter Pamela, as well as his siblings, Jefferson Eugene Grigsby, Jr., Miriam Grigsby Bates and Donald Grigsby.
He is survived by his daughters, Kimberly (Rodney) Sessoms, Linda (Dwight) King, and grandchildren, Krysten Sessoms, Kameryn Sessoms, Karmyn Sessoms, Prasanna King, Reyanda (Marcus) Lucas, Tabitha (Sohn) Nijor, Megan (Craig) Olsen, Tiffany King and Andrea King. Other family members mourning his loss are his sister-in-law, Mattie S. Grigsby and a host of family and friends who will forever miss him.
