Mrs. Mary B. McDonald, 85, of Charlotte NC departed this life on Monday, November 24, 2023 at Atrium University.

Mary Buchanan McDonald was born to Henry Thomas Buchanan and Bertha Mae McKay Buchanan on December 14, 1937, in Marlboro County, South Carolina and went home to be with the Lord on Friday, November 24, 2023.
Our Dear Mother was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grand-mother, great-great-grandmother and great-great-great-grandmother, along with being an amazing sister, aunt, cousin and friend. She was a mother to six children and helped raise two generations of children with love. She dearly loved her family and did all she could to keep them all in well communication for their benefit and growth. Her heart, as well as her door, was always open to anyone in need of a place to eat a meal or rest their weary head. She enjoyed life immensely and was able to find sunshine in an otherwise cloudy situation.
Our Mother was mainly a caretaker of the home but held a few jobs over the years before having endured some medical issues. One job that we all remember her having was working at One Hour Martinizing on West Boulevard where she basically ran the whole establishment and treated it like her own business. She went on to have her own restaurant business on West Boulevard showcasing her amazing cooking skills to the public. Mary was a talented artist who loved drawing and her handwriting was top tier putting calligraphy artists to shame. She graduated from one of the first formerly all African American high schools in Charlotte, Plato Price High School.
Mother met and married Allen W. McDonald, a Korean War Veteran in her late teens. All together they had six children. Allen preceded Mary in death, as well as her youngest daughter, Aretha Y. McDonald. Her parents, Henry and Bertha Buchanan, are also deceased, along with her brothers, Donald M. Buchanan, Robert T. Buchanan and sister, Aggie Buchanan Ray.
She leaves to cherish her memory daughters, Thomasina Brooks (Leonard), Rita Buchanan Alhassan, Belinda A. McDonald, Carolyn E. Vann (John); and son, Raymond A. McDonald (Veronica); with special mention to a very special and devoted grandson, Carlos McDonald. She also leaves fifteen grandchildren and over sixty great-, great-great- and great-great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, many other relatives, along with those whom she lovingly took into her home along the way.
