Mattie Lee Mason, age 88, was the oldest child born to the late Wilson Bernard Mason Sr. and the late Bessie Choate Mason on August 16, 1935 in Fort Mill, South Carolina. She transitioned to be with the Lord on Monday, April 8, 2024, peacefully in her sleep at her daughter's residence.
Mattie attended Fort Mill Public Schools. After her family relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina, she attended and graduated from Plato Price High School Class of 1955. She excelled in mathematics, which was her favorite subject.
Mattie acknowledged her faith in God at a very young age and joined the O'Zion African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. She was a faithful member until her health declined. She served the church in many of its auxiliaries including the Usher Board, Missionary Society (pageant representative for the state of Mississippi), Conference Workers representative (won numerous trophies), Willing Workers and being an honorary member of the Women's Home Overseas Missionary Society.
Mattie was employed at Queens Restaurant and Crimson House. She took an early retirement from Ole Smoke House as a Chef to become the full-time caregiver to her elderly parents. She worked that role like a champ and did not complain! In her spare time, Mattie enjoyed watching western films, Family Feud, Atlanta Braves baseball (particularly the World Series), and all Tyler Perry performances. Also, she enjoyed preparing and cooking delicious meals. Fried chicken was on the menu every Sunday. For the holidays, especially Thanksgiving and Easter, she would make her famous cornbread dressing, turkey, macaroni and cheese, candied yams to name a few. We cannot fail to mention her great sweet tea. Every year, she looked forward to her annual beach trips with relatives, especially with her cousins, the late Jennie Durham and Ernestine C. Ingram.
Mattie will be remembered for her radiant smile, her patience, compassion, generosity and sweet demeanor. Those qualities made her an extraordinary daughter/caregiver, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to many. She was our family's Historical Queen, that 'go-to person' that could tell you the whole family tree without blinking an eye and the many stories that would leave your brain in processing mode after she finished. For the family that remains, there are no goodbyes to Mattie. She will forever live in our hearts.
In addition to her parents, Mattie was preceded in death by her brothers, Wilson Bernard Mason, Jr., J.B. Alexander Ervin, Sr. (Beatrice), Johnny Mason, and Joe Samuel Mason, Sr.; sister, Linda Mason Runion (Lyle); great-granddaughter, Mar'Kiya Janese Mason; niece, Pamela Inez Mason; her aunts, Elizabeth Choate Adams, Emma Choate Chisholm, Faith Choate, Pearl Choate Tate Dunlap, Clara Mason Mobley, Geneva Mason Hall Black; her uncles, George Choate, Howard Choate, Johnny Choate, Robert Choate, and Jones Mason.
