Maude J. Davis, 96, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on Thursday, September 19, 2024.
Mrs. Maude Jones Davis was born April 16, 1928, in Chester County, South Carolina, to the late Leb Jones and Clara Williams. Surrounded by her family, she peacefully transitioned from this earthly life on September 19, 2024 at her residence. She fought a good fight, finished the race of life and is now reaping her reward in heaven.
Ms. Davis was preceded in death by her seven siblings, Frank, Leb, Pearl, Essie, Jeff, Hattie, and her twin, Claude.
She was reared in Chester County and attended public school. After graduating high school, she eventually migrated to Charlotte, NC and began working at Domestic Laundry. She worked there over a span of 20 years, until the company closed. After relocating to Rochester, NY, she was employed by Aid To Hospital, Inc. and remained there for 27 years until retiring.
After retirement, she moved back to Charlotte and filled her days spending time with family, watching Family Feud (although she referred to as Steve Harvey), watching and singing along to hymn choirs (which was streamed online for her viewing), and fishing. She loved to go fishing and was quite good at making a catch. She passed along the love of fishing to her daughter, and they would go fishing together. She also loved music and would listen to blues artists B.B. King and Bobby Blue Bland. Her favorite B.B. King song was "The Thrill Is Gone." When she heard the song, she could not help but dance to the enjoyment of all around her. Until her health began to decline, she also enjoyed going on outings with her good friend, Daisy Davis.
Ms. Davis was originally baptized at Big Calvary in Chester, SC. As an adult, she joined Pentecostal Memorial Baptist Church in Rochester, NY and later moved her membership to Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church under Dr. Douglas Smith. While there, you could find her singing along to the hymns she loved so much. When she relocated to Charlotte in 1996, she joined First Mayfield Memorial Baptist Church, where she faithfully attended Sunday School and worship service until her health declined. She was also a member of the Missionary Auxiliary and was currently the oldest member of the Sunday School and Missionary.
She will be remembered for being feisty, highly protective of her daughter, and a sharp dresser. She prided herself on being "put together" when she stepped out of the house. She was a classy lady and was not fond of jeans. Rather, you would see her in a fashionable pantsuit on casual outings and a stylish suit or dress with a matching hat on Sundays. She would often receive compliments on her fashion.
Ms. Davis loved all of her family and was appreciative of the care her daughter, granddaughter, and great-grandchildren provided but her one-year-old great-great-grandson, Jenesis, stole her heart. Her face would light up when he entered the room and she experienced joy loving on him. He gave her special good-night kisses until the end.
She leaves fond memories with her only daughter who she affectionately called "my baby," Matilda Jones James of the home; thirteen grandchildren, Antonio (Della) Williams, Teresa (Vernon) Grayson, Tyrone James, Tracey (Al) Harewood, Timothy (Tina) Williams, Jr., Kevin (Shelia) James, Tracie Williams, Christie Williams, all of Rochester, NY; Kevin (Kaltun) Williams of Sumter, SC; Vincent Williams and Tonyck James, both of Charlotte, NC; Chandra Williams and Marcus James of the home; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; sixty-nine great-great-grandchildren; two great-great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
