Obituary

Mr. Maurice Lee Mitchell, Jr., 54 of Fort Mill, SC , passed away on Wednesday February 13, 2019.  He was the son of Exie Lenora Mitchell and the late Maurice Lee Mitchell, Sr., was born in Newark, New Jersey. He grew up in Newark and East Orange, New Jersey, and later move to Charlotte, NC.

Maurice graduated from Clifford Scott High School in East Orange, New Jersey.  He attended Teterboro Flight School in New Jersey where he studied to become an Air Traffic Controller.  He worked for a season in the real estate industry, and was a home security contractor.  He was presently working in construction, roofing and sales, in which he was doing very well.

Physical fitness had always been a special thing in his heart.  He loved Martial Arts, of which he became a 3rd Degree Black Belt and Martial Arts instructor.  He was an avid runner who ran many marathons and won many medals.  He was a member of the Black Men Run of Charlotte.  Together, Maurice and his Black Men Run brothers won a Palmetto 200 relay race, and overnight running adventure.

Maurice was an inspiration to his family and friends leading the way to healthy living.  He was at peace with the world and wanted those around him to take life one day at a time and enjoy each day.  You could find him often walking or running a trail, enjoying the nature before him.

Maurice's favorite Martial Arts quote was, "To truly know the Martial Arts, one must experience it along with the Masters.  By following the Masters, one learns perfection of life and discovers the search for true spirit."

In addition to his father, Maurice was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon Mitchell.

Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Exie Mitchell; son, Maurice Lee Mitchell III; daughter, Ayanna Francis Mitchell; sisters, Betty Whitted, Fatima Muhammad and Cathleen Marie Parks; brother, James Nathan Mitchell (Gloria); best friend, Debra McWhirter; two wonderful grandsons, Kadyn and Kamrhyn Mitchell who were the apple of his eye; nine nephews and five nieces, and a host of other relatives and friends.
