Mr. Maurice Williams, 84, of Charlotte, NC, departed this life on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, at Atrium Mercy.
Mr. Maurice Williams, 84, of Charlotte, North Carolina, died on Tuesday, August 6, 2024. He was born on April 26, 1940, in Lancaster, South Carolina, to the late Edgar and Mamie Williams.
Maurice was a long-standing member of New Emmanuel United Church of Christ, where he served on the Trustee Board and sang on New Emmanuel's choir. Maurice loved his church and was a very active member until he became ill. He was always kind and loving to those who knew him.
Maurice was first known for his Great Hit "Little Darlin" that he wrote. It became a national hit in 1957. Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs became famous in the 60's. Their song "Stay" became a Number 1 hit on November 21, 1960. "Stay" was featured in the movie Dirty Dancing in 1987. Maurice was famously known for Beach Music throughout the Carolinas.
Some of his greatest accomplishments were being inducted into The South Carolina Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame, The Vocal Group Hall of Fame and The Beach Music Hall of Fame. He has several gold records.
Maurice is survived by his wife of 63 years, Emily Williams; his devoted nephew, Terry Love; grand-nephew, Malcolm Love and Godson, Mitchell Bailey. He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Luture Williams and two sisters.
