Melvin Jackson, 66 of Charlotte, passed away on February 15, 2020. He was born in Mecklenburg County, the fifth of six children to Willie James and Eloise Thompson Jackson on December 6, 1953. He attended Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools and was a 1972 graduate of East Mecklenburg High School. He attended Fayetteville State University on a golf scholarship.
Melvin passed away on Saturday, February 15, 2020. He was predeceased by his parents and sisters, Delores Jackson and Bettye Jean Jackson. He married the former Zelma Vance on March 2, 1991.
Melvin worked as a truck driver for Concrete Supply Company and later, The Charlotte Observer, from whence he retired in 2016. Melvin was a very talented carpenter who enjoyed creating and working with his hands.
Melvin was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and golfing. Golf was his passion and he played practically every weekend. He participated regularly in amateur tournaments and also briefly played on both the Carolina Mountain Tour and Sunbelt Tour.
He leaves to cherish precious memories Zelma, his wife of 29 years; a daughter, Miriam Gomillion and one son-in-law, Christopher Gomillion; grandson, Christian; granddaughter, Lincoln; three brothers, James Jackson, Norris Jackson, George Jackson; a brother-in-law, Joe Mance; three sisters-in-law, Sharon Jackson, Diane Jackson, Arlene Mance; special friend, Beryl Jackson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
