We announce the Homegoing Celebration for Ms. Melvis Marie Mackey. Melvis Marie was born on April 3, 1960, and departed this life on May 17, 2023. She is preceded in death by her parents, Mrs. Queen Esther Carrouthers Mackey and Mr. George Lawrence Mackey. Melvis was a wonderful mother, sister, and friend to many. She loved nearly everyone she met and was loved by all who were blessed to know her.

Melvis attended Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and graduated with the Class of 1978 from West Mecklenburg High School. She attended Central Piedmont Community College where she received her certification in Food Sciences and Preparation. She then attended Food Preparation training at Johnson and Wales University, where she became employed. She then went on to be employed as a supervisor in Food Services at the University of North Carolina – Charlotte, for 15 years before retiring. With her love for family and friends, you would find yourself at many of her famous cookouts. She was the "Hostess with the Mostest!" and you were guaranteed to have a blast! She was a member in good standing at Rockwell AME Zion Church, Charlotte, NC.

Melvis is the "baby girl from a union that brought eighteen (18) – that's right y'all – 18 siblings together. She is preceded in death by Ardelia "DeeDee" Mackey Huntley (Edward); Sylvania Vivian "Hykie" Mackey; Earl Kent "Bobo" Mackey; Michael Carlton "Mickey" Mackey; Delois Anne Gaddy McLendon; Shawn Christopher Mackey; and George Lawrence Mackey, Jr. Her surviving siblings are Lawrence "Dump" Mackey; Carolyn Jean Mackey Edwards; Mabel Marie C. McCullough; Eric Mackey, Sandra Elaine Mackey Caldwell; Joseph Jones, Stafford Alexander Mackey, Scottie Roger Friday and Roger Lawrence Friday.

Melvis was also preceded in death by her son, Wayne Carrouthers, Jr. and is survived by her firstborn son Omari Dimitri Mackey and her daughter Amia Queen Esther Carrouthers; her god-daughter LaRhonda Nikki Alford. She leaves her life force with her grandchildren; Ariana Marie Carrouthers; Alexandria Michaela Carrouthers; A'Daisha Queen Esther Carrouthers; Amy'a Denice Carrouthers; Zechariah Hunter and Serenity Hunter; her god-grandchildren, Christopher Williams and Cameron Alford. Her sister, her best friend in this whole world - her words - Janine 'Nikki' Wilburn. There are a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, more god-children, and extended family and friends.

Melvis had a zest and a real love for life. She was upfront, and unapologetically herself. She had no problem speaking her mind. She was quick to love on you and feed you. She'd give you a place to sleep if you needed that – but trust – you were on an exit plan. She loved to cook. She loved her music and you could always find her jammin' those old-school jams and her gospel music. Melvis was a force to be reckoned with; a powerfully blessed soul –and she is and will be forever remembered and deeply missed.
