Michael Andrew
Bowens
December 31, 2025
Michael Andrew Bowens, 77, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at Lexington Medical Center in Columbia, SC.
Michael A. Bowens, affectionately known as “Mike,” was born on March 4, 1948, in Charlotte, NC. He peacefully gained his wings on December 31, 2025 at Lexington Medical Center in Columbia, SC.
Mike was the beloved son of the late George Winford and Carrie Belle Neal Bowens. After graduating a year early from Reid High School, he attended Barber Scotia College, where he earned a degree in chemistry and proudly pledged Alpha Phi Alpha, Inc.
Mike began his professional career with Collins and Aikman. In 1976, he was hired as Charlotte Water Department’s Chief Chemist. During his tenure of 30 years, he managed the Charlotte Water Treatment Laboratory and made history as the first African American chemist of the agency, a role he fulfilled with excellence, integrity, and pride.
In addition, Mike worked part-time for the Mecklenburg County ABC Board for 48 years. On July 24, 2025, he was officially retired from the ABC Board, and in recognition of his dedication, loyalty, and longevity, the Mecklenburg County ABC Library was named the Michael A. Bowens Library in his honor.
In the summer of 2008, Mike met a woman he immediately knew would be his wife. With confidence and charm, he approached Barbara Yarbor and declared, “One day you’re going to be my wife, and I’m going to take you to Hawaii.” In 2011, they met again and he reminded her of his promises. True to his word, Mike and Barbara were united in marriage on April 19, 2014, and during their life together, they traveled to Hawaii—not once, but three times.
Mike was an extraordinary son, husband, brother, and father. He was deeply loved by all who knew him, and he loved others just as deeply. A mentor, friend, and helping hand, he was always willing to support those in need. During their illnesses, he was a patient and loving caregiver to his grandmother, parents and sister. He never met a stranger and treated everyone with the same love, kindness, and respect. His warm, infectious smile left a lasting impression on all who encountered him.
Mike also found joy in life’s simple pleasures. One of the joys of his life was planning extensive travel adventures for him and his wife, Barbara. He also enjoyed watching NCIS—both new episodes and reruns—as well as shows dedicated to refurbishing old cars and trucks. A talented and passionate cook, he was an excellent chef, baker, griller, and candy maker, delighting family and friends with meals and treats prepared with love.
A devoted member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, Mike’s Christian faith was unwavering. He dearly loved his church family and especially cherished the Volunteer Sunday School class. He studied God’s Word daily and, prior to his illness, faithfully shared scripture and prayer time each day with his dear friend, Ben Galloway.
Michael “Mike” Bowens leaves behind a powerful legacy of faith, service, love, and kindness that will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his sister Margaret Vanessa Bowens.
He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife, Barbara; children, Christopher Bowens (Vanessa) of Mooresville, NC, Lindsee Ratliff-Bowens of Charlotte, NC; step-children, Ahmad Yarbor (Kendra) of Miami, FL and Phillip Yarbor of Lake Wylie, SC; grandchildren, Caleb Bowens of Mooresville, NC and Stellar Yarbor of Miami, FL; siblings: Larry Bowens (Shirley) of Durham, NC, William Bowens of Jacksonville FL, Ramona McCullough (Johnny) of Charlotte NC; in-laws, Alice Robinson (Allison) of Elyria, OH, Anita Johnson of Charlotte, NC; and many nephews, nieces, cousins, godchildren and friends, all of whom he loved dearly.
