Obituary

Monica Ruby Powell Wynter, 74 of Charlotte, passed away on Wednesday March 6, 2019 at her residence.  She was born October 26, 1944 in Kingston Jamaica to Beresford Powell and Ruth Gwendolyn Robinson, more favorably known as Ms. Claris.  She had a brother, Derrick Powell.  As a child Ruby was a tom boy who loved to fight.  She took "no crap" from anyone.  She grew up on Lilford Ave, off Lady Musgrave Rd.  She attended Providence elementary school then attended Papine Senior.  In her young years, she was a party girl who loved to go out and have fun.  She was a person who enjoyed going on road trips, was very sociable and a great dancer.  Her brother Derrick was her partner in crime as he enjoyed partying with her.  Music was their high.  Ruby was also an excellent cook who was famous for her fried chicken and rice and peas. Both Ruby and her brother Derrick were inseparable.  They looked out for each other.  Their love for each other was unconditional.

In Jamaica, Monica worked at New Yorker Shirt Factory for several years and Colgate Palmolive.  This is where she met David Wynter, whom she later married and moved to Hope Pastures.  Their only child is daughter, Carol.  Ruby and David separated and she and her daughter, Carol, migrated to New York in December 1993, where they created a life for themselves.  While Carol went to school, Ruby worked at Queens Hospital Center.  After working there for several years, she retired for health reasons.  Carol has two daughters Shavany and Shaneeka Reid who were adored by their grandmother.  They were the center of her world and she worried about them constantly.

Ruby left New York and went to North Carolina in search for a better life, but unfortunately throughout the years her health declined.  She put a good fight, but God said it's time to come home.  Monica left behind her daughter Carol, 2 granddaughters, Shavany and Shaneeka Reid, a nephew Paul and his five sons, Stephen, Patrick, Malachi, Caleb and Preston.  She also left behind several childhood friends, some of which are in Jamaica who were as close as family along with friends she met in New York and North Carolina.  I know she was thankful for your love and support throughout the years, especially the Barnett and Williams family.

Ruby was a devoted mother, grandmother, aunt and friend.  Now we all have our new Guardian Angel looking over us.  Forever in our hearts.  WE LOVE YOU. May you finally sleep in peace...
