Obituary

Mrs. Nancy Jean Barber Nelson, 79, of Charlotte, NC departed this life on Thursday, January 4, 2024, at Atrium University.

Nancy Jean Barber Nelson received her heavenly wings January 4, 2024, at 12:00 pm.  She entered this world November 9, 1944, in Harrisburg, NC to the late Eugene Barber and Docia Polk Barber.  She was preceded in death by her sister, Carolyn V. Barber.  Nancy is survived by brothers, William V. Barber and Donald R. Barber and sisters, Linda B. Wright (John) and Pamela B. Sims, all of Charlotte, NC.  She also has an aunt, Virgie Polk, of Granite Quarry, NC.  She loved to spend time with a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Nancy graduated from Logan High School in Concord, NC, where she acquired her love for music.  She was a letter girl in the marching band and ensured her three children acquired musical talents as well.  Nancy received her BA Degree in Theology from Teamer's School of Religion.

Nancy gave her life to Christ at an early age and became an ordained deacon at Ebenezer Baptist Church.  Deacon Emeritus Nelson also served as a missionary, Sunday School member and co-founder of the Rose Ministry, serving those in need.  She also played the piano/organ and moved others through her gift of singing. Nancy was an Eastern Star and member of Alpha Pi Chi Sorority.

Nancy was an avid reader of the daily news and her Sunday School lesson.  She also kept up with current events and loved spending time with her family, cooking for others, gardening, and tending to her plants.

Those she leaves to cherish her memories will dearly miss "Ms. Nancy."  She is survived in legacy by her three children, Dr. Gary L Nelson (Rabia) of Alpharetta, GA, Dr. Sharon Nelson Potts (Carlos), and Deaconess Kelly Nelson Watkins (Deacon Alex Watkins), both of Charlotte.  "B-Ma" was very proud of her grandchildren, Krystle (Styve), Clayton, Jasmyne, Alex Jr., Tayler B., and Khadijah. Her most precious jewels were her great-grands, Bryson, Aniya, Atlas, Aspen, Joseph, and Yara.
