Obituary

O'Donald Garrett, 84, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on Monday April 6, 2026.

O’Donald Garrett, born on May 11, 1941, in Charlotte, NC, passed away on Monday, April 6, 2026. He was the first of eleven children born to O'Donald and Mabel Garrett.

He was predeceased by his parents; daughter, Reba Rochelle Whaley; sisters, Barbara G. Lanier and Wandra Elaine Garrett; and brothers, Willie Alvin, Hudson Lee, and Lonnie Ralph Garrett.

Don is survived by his loving wife, Maggie Garrett; his granddaughter, Sloane Siobhan Whaley; his siblings, Samuel (Margaret) Garrett of Charlotte, NC, Edwin Garrett of Phoenix, AZ, Gwen Garrett of Phoenix, AZ, Rev. Harry A. (Sharon Randle) Garrett of Dallas, TX, and Thomas (Melissa) Garrett of Charlotte, NC. He also leaves behind a host of grandchildren, great- grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will remember him fondly.

O’Donald was in the first graduating class of York Road High School. He graduated from Johson C. Smith University in 1964. Don was always a hard worker. During his school years, he worked to support himself at Nivens Drug Store. Don worked for J.A. Jones Construction in San Francisco, CA. He later worked for many years at Superior Bakery in Fayetteville, GA. He finally retired from Equifax in Duluth, GA.

Don loved playing golfing and watching golf on television. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. Don faced life’s challenges head-on, bringing humor and laughter to everyone around him. He used his humor to teach us lessons of wisdom through his life’s experiences. Sadness was never his style. When the newspaper was no longer available, he worked the crossword puzzles in a puzzle book since he wouldn’t bother to master getting the puzzle on his phone. He did learn to use Facebook on his phone to stay in touch with family updates.

Don was married to his wonderful wife, Maggie, for the past 30+ years where he gained a huge familial community of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be laid to rest in Atlanta, GA on Saturday, April 18, 2026.

O’Donald will be deeply missed and forever in the hearts of us all.

May he rest in Peace.
