Today, we celebrate the life of Palmer Finley, born in Ferriday, LA, on September 12, 1952, to James Finley and Marie Overton Finley. Palmer was the youngest son of six siblings and graduated from Ferriday High School in 1970. He passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2024.
During the seventies, Palmer and his wife, Margie Finley, moved to Charlotte, NC, where they built a foundation for their growing family. Palmer was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and recently became a great-grandfather.
As a young man, Palmer excelled in sports and gained recognition for his car racing skills. For years, he rebuilt his cherished blue and white striped Camaro and many more. He also enjoyed fishing, discussing politics and sports, and spending time outdoors. Palmer was a member of the Nations Ford Community Church under the leadership of the late Bishop Philip M. Davis and became a member of Community Life Church under Pastor R.J. Davis. For several years, Palmer worked in the mechanical and industrial industry, operating and repairing machines. After serving over twenty years at Sun Chemical, he focused on his love of service by providing lawn care and landscaping services to his neighbors.
Known for his kindness, generosity, practical wisdom, and storytelling, Palmer was deeply loved by his family and friends. He was affectionately known as "Paw Paw" and "P Mo". His garage was his gathering place where people would stop by whenever it was opened and his delicious gumbo was cherished throughout the holidays.
Palmer was preceded in death by his father, James Finley, Sr.; mother, Marie Overton Finley; and his eldest brother, James Finley, Jr.
He leaves to behind cherished memories with his wife of forty nine years, Margie Finley; children, Alicia Finley, Pamela Finley, and Clarissa Finley of Charlotte, NC, Demetrius Johnson of Grand Prairie, TX; siblings, Helen Finley and Edward Finley (Faye) f Charlotte, NC, Mildred Finley and Sherry Finley of Ferriday, :A; six grandchildren, Talaina Finley, Tamaiya Finley, Tia Fullwood, and Lanae Brown of Charlotte, NC, Deja Johnson and Demetrius Johnson II of Grand Prairie, TX; great-granddaughter, Oaklynn Johnson of Grand Prairie, TX; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Palmer Finley's life was a testament to love, faith, and dedication to family and community. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
