Obituary

Philip McCoy Dunston, Sr. was born on November 2, 1939, in Bunn, North Carolina to Woodrow and Hazel Dunston.  He was the oldest male child of eight children.

Philip (aka Phil) was a graduate of Riverside High School and attended Johnson C. Smith University on a football scholarship. He was an avid reader and life-long learner.  He intentionally instilled the value of education in his children and grandchildren.  He raised courageous, fearless, and fierce children. He epitomized what it means to have a growth mindset.  His expectation was always: "You can do it; you will do it; and you will do it well."

Phil's employment spans 30+ years in the manufacturing sector, having worked at Celanese Coatings, Chic Hosiery, and Stork Screen Industries, from which he retired in 2003. He was a hard worker, who loved and provided for his family.  From a supervisor, handyman, mechanic and even a chef, he could do it all.

In addition to loving his family and his work, Phil loved serving in his church.  Prior to joining St. Paul Baptist Church in 2013, Phil and his family were members of St. Luke Baptist Church for over 45 years.  He served as a Trustee for 25 years, a Boy-Scout Leader for five years, and a faithful member of the Adult Choir for over 20 years, where he sang to the glory of God.  When he and his family moved their membership to St. Paul, he became active in that church as well, serving in the Men's Sunday School Class, the Men of Valor Ministry, and one of his favorite ministry areas, singing in the Men's Choir. Some of his favorite songs that people loved to hear him sing were: "Trouble Won't Last Always", "I'm Redeemed", and "Come Let Us Reason Together" .

Phil was married to the joy of his life and his college sweetheart, Ida Hall Dunston. They were married 60 years.  His loving memory shall forever be cherished by his children: Dr. Philip M. Dunston of Atlanta, GA, D. Trent Dunston (Melvina) of Charlotte, NC, Dione Dunston Bell (Aaron) of Columbia, SC; his grandchildren: Jauqueia Graham (Anthony), Arionna Bell, Simeon Bell, Emanual Dunston, and Rhomen Dunston; his siblings: Coy, Earl (Nancy), Gloria, and Michael; his goddaughters: Mary Towe, Lisa and Tisa Murray; and many dear friends and relatives.  Phil's passing is preceded by his sister, Dr. Curtis Uvonne Howard, and his brothers, Charlie and Otis.

Though Phil is experiencing more joy than all of us who are present today, when we transition and join him, let is also be said of us: "Well done thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord." -Matthew 25:21
