Raymond Diaz, also known as Ray and affectionately known as "Pop", was born on September 2, 1922 to Maria and Pedro Diaz in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He moved to New York at the early age of five with his father. Ray graduated from high school and later enlisted into the U.S. Army. He met and married the love of his life and wife, Clotilde (Tillie) Narvaez, in 1948, on Christmas Eve in New York City. Together they raised six children in Bronx, New York.
Ray provided for his family as a seamster, a textile manager, a chauffeur, a sky cap, a taxi cab driver, and various other occupations. He lived many years in New York but also resided in Tampa, FL, Miami, FL, Atlanta, GA, and Charlotte, NC. He had an infectious laugh, a beautiful smile, and a personality that could charm anyone.
As an active older adult, Pop was fiercely independent, pragmatic, and had an unbelievably sharp mind! Up until the age of 101, Pop could often be found driving his car to run errands, being happily dragged to the next social event, waiting for a loved one to bring him a hot plate of food and a cold beer, taking time to watch his political news of the day, reading a good book, having an intellectual conversation, laughing at a funny joke, doing his little dance to salsa music, or cooking a great meal in the kitchen. It should also be noted that he had a keen fashion sense and was sharp as a tack! He was filled with ageless wisdom and often shared amazing and incredible stories about a life well lived.
Ray is preceded in death by his parents and siblings; his wife, Tillie Diaz; his son Raymond Diaz, Jr.; his daughter Carmen; his son-in-law Wilfredo Carrillo; and his daughter-in-law, Julie Diaz.
Raymond is survived by his daughter, Milagro Carrillo; his sons, Pedro Diaz (Yvette Dia), Francisco Diaz, Sr., Robert Diaz (Louis DeJesus); grandchildren, Celeste Diaz, Eric Diaz, Alonda Callender (Jason Callender), Francisco Diaz, Jr (Tiffany Diaz), Steven Diaz, Melody Diaz and Olivia Dia; bonus granddaughter, Monica Weaver (Mickey Weaver); and a loving host of beautiful great-grandchildren.
Pop was called home on Tuesday, December 12, 2023. He was vibrant, lively and 101 years young! He was loved and is greatly missed by a huge family and countless friends.
