Reggie, as he was affectionately called, was born September 2, 1944 in Washington, DC. He transitioned this life Tuesday night, May 19, 2020 in Charlotte, NC. He was born to the late Pearlie Mae Henderson and Thomas Harold Garmany. At a young age he moved to Mt. Olive, NC to live with his maternal grandparents, the late Ralph and Hattie Goodman.
He attended the Wayne County Public Schools and graduated from Carver High School, Mt. Olive in 1962. Reggie moved back to Washington with the encouragement and support of his godmother, Onra Dillard. He worked and saved for college. A few years later he enrolled and attended N.C. A&T State University in Greensboro studying Architectural Engineering.
Reggie sharpened his architectural skills and further developed that knowledge while working at a structural engineering company. His progressive work history included jobs at IBM as an IT Tech, top performing Car Salesman and others. These professions led him to realize his true career was within his entrepreneurial abilities. He set high goals to begin a contracting business and continued it for more than thirty years.
Even though Reggie was respected as a hardworking businessman, his first love was family! He leaves a rich legacy of keeping connected with his grandchildren and their accomplishments. PaPa didn't miss award ceremonies, graduations, birthday celebrations, family dinners and any opportunity to share his heart and show his pride for them. He rarely missed family reunions and always encouraged his children to attend because he believed family should know and support one another. The Henderson family motto is, "The family that prays together, stays together." Family was definitely most important to him.
He had an inviting personality, was a friendly man and never met a stranger. He had an uncanny ability to remember many people, even after only meeting them once. Reggie gave great advice like: "relax and don't worry, things will work themselves out"; "life is too short to…"; "if you can conceive it and believe it, you can achieve it"; and "have a nice day with Jesus." These were some of his regular words of wisdom.
Reggie was preceded in death by his mother, father, brother, and his first granddaughter, Joselyn Briana Butler.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Janet Henderson; his daughters: Regina Henderson-Jordan, Donyale Henderson Davis, LaVonya Henderson Ethridge (Lavar), Kendra Henderson Butler (Duane), and Lisa Hawkins; his son: Reginald James Henderson, Jr.; his beloved grandchildren: Daija Nicole Henderson, Jazmine Davell Hawkins, Angel Vanessa Butler, Lauren Elizabeth Jordan, Jordan Christina Henderson, Erin Elizabeth Butler, Reginald James Henderson III, David Christopher Butler, Ajana Martreece Davis, Gabrielle Nicole Ethridge, Alexis Nicole Henderson, Kellan Lavar Ethridge, and Kaleb Diontae Ethridge. He also leaves two sisters: Clarice Hart (James) and Roseinia Garmany; a host of cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends.
